When a college has x seats in a competitive program, do they admit much more than x people to that program?
I think it means exactly what it sounds like: that’s the maximum number of people they can accomodate.
In the case of Cal Poly, all programs are impacted meaning they have more applicants than spots. Typically Cal Poly has yield rate of 33%. Meaning that if they accept 3 students only 1 will typically end up attending.
The yield rate is function of the number of applicants, students financial situation, financial aid given, and other factors such as location and student perception. That said, with a yield rate of 33% for the school, they will accept 3x more applicants than spots available in order to compensate for students who don’t attend. For more competitave programs, such as certain engineering majors, yeild rates are 40-45% so the will tend to only admit 2.5x more applicants than spots.
Hopefully this clears up your question… and didn’t make you more confused. :disagree:
Thank you
