Suppose I'm a 2nd-year student at UCSD with a 3.35 GPA. What kind strengths do I need to overcome that lackluster GPA? Great essays? Extracurriculars? And how strong do those have to be?

well 3.35 is low....plus it's from a UC...so I would days 30%-40% chances...UCs generally look at GPA + classes taken....my advice would be to work your ass off on that GPA...if you can get it above 3.5 that would be GREAT

wow, you're like the eighth ucsd want-out ive seen.

Honestly, I think GPA is your greatest weight.

darkarmour: what don't you like about UCSD? just curious...

Alright, enough with the suppositions. I'm a 2nd year with a 3.35. I was a winter admit last year, and it was absolutely terrible (no housing, no friends). I had saw the school psychiatrist and suffered from depression. Anyway, I sort broke out of that this year and got involved with campus activities - and I'm wondering what sorts of activities would compensate for the 3.35. And.. how good of an essay do I need?

I've taken a lot of upper div classes - almost as many lower division ones. (I have a slate of lower-divs for GE requirement completion left to go...)

And yeah, I'm waiting as hard as anyone else for decisions.

I think you have a decent chance at UCLA just cuz theyve accepted ppl with low GPAs from ucsd. As for UCB, they're probably much more stringent academically.

Anyways I feel you. I absolutely hated this place my freshman year, but at leasst I studied a lot.

Good luck! :)

Yeah, I hate UCSD with such a vengeance. I've been shaking in my shoes since last week - I want to head for a big city so much.

Anyway, what I really want to know is what do I NEED to push me over the top? I've never been in the college admissions game, so I'm incredibly curious as to what I need to sufficiently pad around my GPA so that they'll accept me.

UCSD wasn't that bad. I guess I was the only one who was blessed with great friends here(?).

Hey futbolista and darkarmour. Wishing you guys good luck on admissions this week, weekend, whenever the decisions come. Hope we all get in to our dream school!

Citan, congratulations on UCLA. For me, there was not really a particular thing that I didn't like about UCSD. It's simply that CAL is so close to home and their EECS program is high up there.

dicky: about Cal....I dont' think I will get in...and then the EECS prog there is insane, and I dont' want to end up in academic probation

If Cal accepts you, they must think you have the qualities to succeed there, even though you don't think you do.

at least you are at UCSD which is a good school! i think you have a pretty good chance.

however, if i get a 4.0 at Santa Barbara, along with many extracurriculars, do i have a chance of transferring?
