A letter as in for a letterman jacket. Usually there's one for music, sports, and academics I think. Everyone here probably already has or will get the academics one.. what about the others? Will you be getting one or already have them? And what does it take at your school to get one? Just wondering. I really want all three, but I don't play a sport (yet, hopefully will be), and I'm not in band or anything.

My school doesn't offer letters... so you would have to buy:
A letterman jacket and your own letters.

In my school, Lettermans are offered for Swimming, WP, CC, Basketball, and Football.

Mine offers them for everything even big national clubs like DECA and HOSA.

We offer athletic letters only, I think. I've never heard of an academic letter... Also, we don't have jackets either. We just get the letters.

When you get get 4 Varsity points you get a letter for that said point, (each additional 4 points you get a lil chevron thing), after 16 points you earn your free Jacket.
You can get them for Choir && Band for 4 years participation I believe, not positive.
You can get letters for Managing sports but, you still have to buy the jacket.
The same for Academics, you earn it but accumulating so many points for good grades but you still have to buy the jacket, and I didn't want the jacket. I have my letters && plaque tho. (One Academic letter, one sports manager letter)

It's so easy to get them at my old school. Letter jackets are ugly as hell though.

Um, you just have to be on the varsity team I'm pretty sure.

Yeah, I have a few letters from stuff at my school, and they weren't difficult to get.. I didn't even know that I was trying to get them, lol. I didn't buy a jacket though [like 200 bucks] because they're not nice looking AT ALL and I'd never wear it...

For track, you need to earn a certain amount of points (depends on what you run / do). You earn points by placing 1-3 in important (or at least, not unimportant) meets.

I lettered in soccer (which you do by playing in more than 1/2 of Varsity games, each sport is different) as a sophomore, and could technically letter in academics but that is considered to be the lamest of all lame things to do at our school. I agree. Letter jackets are for serious athletes. You shouldn't be able to get one for a 4.0, just like you can't get a chess team trophy for playing football.

^ Lol, one of last (school) year's seniors had a varsity jacket with Math League and College Bowl "varsity" letters. He only did it for fun first impressions though, as he was also a varsity soccer/track runner.

I got one freshman year for being in orchestra hahah everyone thought it was crap, but you can also get them from Varisty sports at my school. I don't know about an academic letter though.

Most people at my school don't do the whole letterman jacket thing. It's weird. I have seen maybe two or three older students wearing them. I'm guessing they just went to a local store and ordered them.

My old school just gave them for like a 3.0 gpa (or was it 3.5?).

This school doesn't have any tradition like that.

At my school, if you play the sport you letter. Although no one really buys letterman jackets. (Maybe 5 or so a year.)

Wow, I didn't even know that letters were a thing until I got one junior year for fencing.
Obviously I am down with the sports knowledge.

For my xc team, you need to place in the top 7 on the team in half the meets. For the track team you need to score 5 points for the team during the season(in a meet, a first place finish in an event is 5 points, second is 3, and third is 1).

My old HS gave them out for every sport (varsity sports only) as well as academics. However, the academic letter (3.5 GPA for all semesters, sophomore or above) has a little symbol on the bottom of it, so everyone can tell that you're just a dork and you don't play sports LOL.

Our jackets were like $400! I could've went to fricken drivers training for that!

Giving letters out for anything but sports is stupid.
