What Does It Take To Get Into an MD/PhD Program?

<p>I have a few questions for anyone who can help me :)
I'm interested in this type of program because I want to eventually conduct medical research while being in a hospital environment and giving personal attention to patients. I care for both equally and was hoping some of you could answer my questions</p>

<p>1) is there more or less competition for this type of program among pre-meds? Is the application process completely different?</p>

<p>2) what does it take to get into an MD/PhD program? Higher GPA, Higher MCAT's? Is this similar to applying for BS/MD programs when applying for undergrad (write another essay, highly competitive, etc.)</p>
