What does it take to get into SU's Newhouse School of Communications?

Hey! I'm a junior in highschool and I would give ANYTHING to go to Syracuse's newhouse school of communications. Since I was 7, i've been obsessed with eventually becoming a broadcast journalist. I love the campus and everything about it!

So I've heard that Newhouse is EXTREMELY difficult to get into, but just HOW hard?

My GPA right now is about a 3.9 UW, and I just took the SATs for the first time last weekend. In addition, I definitely have some ECs that are relevant to broadcasting/journalism/communications. Would newhouse me as someone with a strong drive and passion for their school? Would these be "hooks"?

-Editor of my school paper
-Been on the school paper staff since freshman year (only one in my class to do this)
-Interned at a pretty popular radiostation
-Job shadowed with a reporter at the largest TV station in my area (apparently these are really hard to come by)
- A volunteer at the town tv-station
-Used to be part of a small group that would perform youth radio shows on various small radio stations
-Helps write newsletters for the local chamber of commerce

I mean, I have a bunch of other ECs but these are the ones relevant to communications. Are these strong enough? What else should I do? And lastly, what target SAT score am I looking for to get into Newhouse.

your gpa is higher than mine. :)
very focused activities and interests...

shows your extreme desire to attend that school.
i say why not..

don't stress too much, your gpa is fine, ECs are fine, aim for SAT's in the 600's for each section and write good essays. And no, it's not EXTREMELY difficult to get into ... it might be for the average arts and sciences student at SU but any above average student with EC's aimed at broadcasting stuff has a decent shot.

i applied early decision, had high sat's, a decent average, editor-in-chief of newspaper, i'm a legacy, and i did not get into newhouse. i would say that it is borderline impossible lol...

hsjunior, according to your screenname, it appears you are a junior, therefore you couldn't have applied ED, unless you were doing early admissions, which I highly doubt. I think you're just trying to make people feel bad.

hsjunior is now a senior. However, his "high sat's" are actually quite low.

of course they are "low" for this site because everyone here gets like 2400's, but my final scores were "high" for syracuse...i appreciate the attitude

well thank you to everyone that replied!

sorry hsjunior about you not getting in. Maybe it was because you didn't have enough EC's aimed at journalism/broadcasting? I know that they are really into how much passion you show for that subject area...and I was just wondering if what I have is enough.

2030 is not a low score at all. Maybe for this board it is, but I would be ecstatic if I got that score!

ahhhhh im so anxious. I'm hopeful but also really nervous after I read hsjunior's post. i dont think i can wait another year to know whether i will be able to go there or not!

if you don't get in right away, you can always transfer after one year (which is probably what i'm going to do)...freshmen in newhouse apparently only take once newhouse class the first year anyways...if you get a 3.5 or better you are automatically the following year...being the editor-in-chief of the newspaper shows that i love communications...i even gave them a copy of the paper in my interview and when they came to visit my school...i remember at an info session the lady said that they don't care what you've done in high school though...they can always teach you communications...as annoying as it might be, they look at your gpa and sat's, and that is how they are making their decision

ahhh thats such a drag that you didn't get in! Those sats are good! what was your gpa UW and how were your essays? sorry that im asking so many questions...

thanks...lol it's ok...i had a b+/a- freshman year, b+ sophomore, b junior, and now a- senior...my school is really hard though and nobody gets straight a's...they send a letter with our grades explaining all of it...i was really proud of my essay actually...i thought that after reading it they wouldn't have the heart to reject me haha...it was all about how i developed this passion through the newspaper, what i've learned, what i want to do in the future...even added in a joke or two...i think it came down to that last year they had 500 extra people in the university or something because more people decided to go than they thought would...so they are being extremely harsh this year...yesterday i found out that that 3,000 people applied to newhouse this year for only 300 spots...i got into the management school though which is half of my desired dual major...hoping to also be in newhouse after the first year
