What does it take to get merit scholarships from BU?

What kind of stats bring the half or full tuition awards, and is it mostly based on stats (if so, what levels in which stats?), or are there other factors?

Wondering what to expect for a 2300 (1500 Math+CR) and top 3-4% rank in a very competitive HS. This is for a humanities with a possible education double major.

If she’s doing School of Ed there is a very good full tuition merit scholarship available. you just have to write these 2 essays

but those are good stats too for a plain old merit scholarship :)

There are also the classics scholarships - great if you like Latin and/or Greek.

Thanks for these suggestions. Do you know from experience what the recipients’ scores, ranks, GPA, etc are? My older kid got a half-tuition merit scholarship from BU several years ago, but we were surprised (though NOT ungrateful for any merit award! We felt lucky to get merit offers, whatever the amount!) that it was not full tuition–for a >2300 SAT, NMF, published research, great ECs, etc–however the HS did not weight grades and this kid’s ranking (top 10%) was significantly lower than it would have been if HS weighted. Which led us to suspect rank mattered heavily for BU’s merit scholarships. The current applicant has a top 3-4% rank.

Does anyone know what counts most to BU in awarding the Trustee or the School of Education Presidential Scholarships? Trying to decide whether to apply to BU. Scholarship potential will be the deciding factor. This kid already has a guaranteed full ride to the state flagship and a half-ride to a top 50 private U in hand at the moment.

That was exactly my situation when I was applying. I kind of randomly applied to BU and it ended up that scholarships worked out so that it was a more attractive deal than my just about full ride at my state school. As far as the Trustee goes, I think it’s definitely going to be scores that play the most role. However, for the SED scholarship I think the essays would play more of a factor. I knew two people who had that scholarship, and while they were both great students, I’d imagine it was more of their commitment to teaching that won them the scholarship.

As far as BU’s general merit scholarships go, I do think that they tend to cap them unless you have need. The kids who get the most money are the ones with high scores and a lot of need. They use a kind of sliding scale and how much you get depends on how much you need and how much they want you.

BU certainly surprised me with scholarship. With your kid’s numbers, I’d recommend applying…you never know where they’ll come out!
