Hello, I am a senior in high school and I was wondering what it takes to transfer out of sjsu to a UC preferably UCSB, UCI, UCB, UCSB, UCLA, UCR or UCSD? I know SJSU is a good school but it is more expensive for me to attend SJSU than it is to attend a UC because I qualify for the blue and gold program and other financial aid. I am a pretty good student I have a 4.0 gpa, I’ve taken every Honors and Ap classes offered at my school with the exception of 1 and passed a couple of Ap tests, am ranked top 7-8% of my graduating class, have done about 5 clubs, am an officer for a club, have done FFA and raised animals every year for my county fair, 3 sports, and almost 200 hours of community service. I know all this has prepared me for rigors of college. I know that I can excel in school even while there are several things on my plate. What do you suggest I do so that I can transfer out of SJSU into a UC, yes I know it’s very difficult considering that they only accept a few state university students but I am determined to.
I don’t want to go to a community college because my advisor has told me that they don’t always have enough space for the classes neeeded to transfer out of there. I know several people who are stuck in community college and have been for several years.
This may be a dumb question, but if you are such a good student and ranked in the top 10% of your class, did you not get into any UC’s and SJSU is your backup school?
For UCR/UCI and UCSB, there is TAG which is the Transfer Guarantee for these UC’s if you attend a community college: http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/transfer/guarantee/
If you want to transfer from SJSU, then you need to match SJSU’s courses to the UC’s courses required for transfer which can difficult but doable. The easiest way would be to match your local CCC’s courses to SJSU’s and then to the UC’s. Use assist.org.
A CSU to UC transfer has lower priority than a CCC to UC transfer.
You could also consider attending a Community college with an Honors program which should give you registration priority for classes and you could finish within 2 years easily, especially if you have some AP credit.
Haha it’s not stupid at all I got into UCM but I don’t like the area and I got rejected to all the other I applied to I know that if I applied to UCD or UCR I would have been accepted but my mom wanted me to apply to UCLA and I wanted to apply to UCR instead I regret listening to her and I didn’t apply to UCD because I don’t really like the area and I applied to UCB, UCLA,UCSB, and UCI I think my expectations were too high but I am still confused by UCI’s decision because a lot of kids at my school were rejected and were very qualified and their machine broke so a lot of us weren’t able to see our admission decision until 1-2 weeks later so it sees fishy thank you so much for the help and your advise!
Is the worry of getting into certain classes your main concern for not wanting to attend a CC? In my experience this hasn’t been a major problem, but it does depend on which CC you attend and what your intended major/field of study is. As a CC student you can attend as many CCs you want/need. Many CCs are connected based on the region/county. Currently I’m taking classes at 5 different CCs this semester. If you plan your schedule well then transferring out in 2 years isn’t too difficult.
TAG is a viable option if you want to get into UCSB, UCI or UCD (you mentioned UCSB twice, I’m assuming you meant UCD). You can also reapply to SJSU as well. SJSU also posts the cutoff GPAs each year for different majors, so you have an idea for the GPA you should aim for. There is also a table for the middle GPA range for UCs as well.
Last year for every UC around 92-97% of admitted transfers came from CCs so that should you give you an idea of how CC students are a priority compared to students from 4-years.
