is that the degree that you get upon graduation from law school?

Not necessarily, but it's the most common one.

(Analogy: Most people complete their undergraduate studies with a BA, but some earn a BS.)

Yes it stand for juris doctor. The only thing that sucks about law school is that even after you graduate, you cannot practice law until you pass the bar. I pass and go to many bars alot, but taking the bar is not as fun as it sounds.

ok, i just saw a person's name with the name of a law school and j.d. after it and wondered if that meant he had graduated from that law school

In all probability, yes.

Jack Daniel's

I kid! It's the program of study everyone takes to became a lawyer. It's different from the LL.M. and the other alphabet soup abbreviations. If you want to be a lawyer and you're out of college, you'll be going for the J.D. (Juris Doctor).
