what does nyu like to see

hi i wanted to know whether nyu likes seeing a well rounded person who is involved in different volunteer works and clubs as well as different jobs or do they like it when someone is focused on one particular thing
like lets say i do only volunteer work and jobs and clubs that are associated with medicine would they rather have that or someone more well rounded .. i guess like a "renaissance person" lol

I don't know about variety, but from what I've seen, NYU likes people with leadership positions. As long as you have multiple activities, though, I don't know if it really matters whether they're in one field or in varied fields. Might depend on the school.

What about for Stern, I'm worried because everything I am involved in is geared toward going into business.

Stern? I've seen people get in who did a lot of business stuff. On the other hand, I have never done anything business-related (not even DECA), and I got in. I think it's the leadership positions that count. They seem to be really big at Stern... just about everyone I know who's going there next year has had some sort of big leadership position. (It doesn't have to be exclusive or anything... just something that takes time and effort, rather than just in name only.)

But... what year of school are you in? If you're younger, I suggest diversifying your activities a little. You don't want to be totally entrenched in business, then decide that you don't like it. If you're applying next year, maybe write an essay on something slightly different from business, to make yourself a little more well-rounded. It never hurts to appear well-rounded, as long as you're strong in something, I think. :)

But I'm just out of the application process myself, so you might want to seek a second opinion.

i think the biggest things you should concentrate on is taking challenging classes (ap's honors) and getting good grades. grades first then ec's

what are examples of leadership positions?

WAKE UP. I have not posted in a while but this caught my sarcastic eye. If you don't know what a leadership position is---then you are most likely NOT a leader.
And of course NYU, or any school, would want a well rounded person, as opposed to some one demensional dork.

High SAT scores

Oh, come on, ellockonyu, maybe she (?) just wants examples of the types of leadership positions NYU's looking for.

Well, really, they can be all sorts of leadership positions. As long as you invest effort into them. Like, you don't want to be a leader in name only... President of the Milk and Cookies Club won't do much, not unless if you prove it was significant (like, you started the club, or you really did a lot of work for it. Strangely enough, there is an M&C club at NYU, haha). Examples of leadership positions... well, I've been an editor of my high school paper for three years (editor-in-chief this year, and I put in A LOT of hours just getting out an issue a month), section leader in my school's marching band, first chair flute... you get the idea. Stuff you have to work for, but they don't have to be way out there or anything. This probably applies to most schools, although these days, it seems like you have to be president of a small country or something to get into Harvard, etc. :D

Focused isn't one-dimensional, by the way. If you're truly passionate about medicine or whatever, delia89, then go for it. I would advise some diversification of your activities, but I know there are people who have gotten into top schools (don't know about NYU, but it's probably similar) with a very focused path.

High SAT scores are almost a must for Stern, and they're probably pretty important for CAS. Not so much for Tisch and Steinhardt... those are based off essays or whatever, and I'm not sure about Gallatin.

Please, if anyone is going to make in the NYC, they need to be a bit more cutting edge than: "What's a leader?" I think there is an opening at Iowa State for her. President of the slop the Hogs would be a nice resume builder.

um i know what a leader is some people in this site have such an attitude

i was asking for examples of leadership positions because i know that some positions are like presidents of clubs and things i can do in school but i want to know things i can do outside of school .. i was asking for ideas

ijailin89 thnx your post was helpful
