In the day of cell phones there really is no reason for the student not to call. I agree with the Capt if the student is really interested they will call. As a parent I like hearing the voice of direct experinence from many that have gone on before.

I agree, but remember some schools do not allow the use of cell phones. However I think that any guidance dept would allow the student to call to speak with Capt. Johnson.

I think it's okay for parents to call about adminstrative things, but the actual admissions process needs to be handled by the candidate.

KP tip # 137 - If anyone still has a kid with wisdom teeth. Get 'em outta there.

I realize that was kinda out of the blue but its one of those things that they didn't tell us..... so now...... Well, the Jamz will be eating milkshakes next friday. Hope to save a few good souls from having to get it done while away from home. Mamma ain't happy.

One aspect of KP admissions that remains murky is the geographical distribution of candidates. As a federal service academy, KP has an obligation to come up with a plebe class that fairly represents the nation as a whole. Some states, especially those with a strong maritime tradition, produce a "bumper crop" of highly qualified candidates. Others might produce a thinner crop. So if an applicant is from one of those states with hordes of candidates, he or she might remain "on hold" until slots from other states free up, so to speak. So you might get an offer of admission as early as December or as late as June.

I understand where you are coming from Jamzmom...yes I am eating crow... Was your S having trouble with his wisdom teeth? I know my S still has his but the dentist says they are not causing any problems so "let sleeping dogs lie".

Supportmom, no trouble with the wisdom teeth either. Our dentist said they didn't need to come out until much later in life if they ended up causing problems so we sent him on to the academy. When he got there, he was told that it is an academy requirement. That all Midshipmen must have them out before they can go out to sea. Son was sneaky about it and talked the KP dentist into letting him get them out before this second sea duty. She said, "He cannot go out to sea this time with them still intact". I looked back through all of KP paper work & nothing was said about this requirement that we'd received. Just a waiver that you sign saying the academy will not be responsible for surgical cost in removing said teeth. Get 'em outta there. Tell your dentist that its military. He'll understand I think.

Nothing worse than impacted wisdom teeth...other than my two kidney stones worst pain I've ever endured...GET EM OUT WHILE YOU CAN!

Yes, we found out ahead of time that they need to be out before sea duty, so my daughter had them done during Thanksgiving Break of her senior year of HS. We just explained to the oral surgeon that it was required by the Academy and my insurance took care of it. One less thing to worry about and I think it was easier for her since they weren't impacted (as mine were when I had them done in my 20's). She even managed to eat Thanksgiving dinner that year, just the day after!

I agree that the candidate needs to call.

When mom or dad call it may send the message that mom or dad are more invested in this school than the candidate.

USMMA takes a tremendous amount of comittment. They select the students they belief have that comittment. And that doesn't always mean that the students have the highest GPA or test scores either. It means they have demonstrated in their pursuit they are serious about the school.

Our son is now on "hold". If one is on hold, does anyone know how many get an appointment versus an alternate status from this pool of candidates?

Never seen any numbers put out there by KP indicating that. I can say that the several times I've seen or heard of the "hold", an appointment follows. Hope the KP police don't come banging my door down....

Let us know how it goes!! Good luck! I have a good feeling!

I agree with WDNJ, as my sons blue and gold officer explained it to him. He is now a plebe, and his status was on hold for some time before he became a Principal. During some of that time his medical status was under review. Be sure when you check the website that his medical says qualified and all other fields say yes or pass..

once again, harrass admissions... works wonders
: )

Oh trust me, I check the site every day! Actually, our son is good to go, DODMERB was completed and found fully qualified back in August, CFA was passed in September, Nomination in November and so the story goes. We're fine, just curious, not quite the "crazy-with-anticipation" as we were with the first son. We've mellowed a bit knowing it can be "hurry up and wait". We haven't heard up or down from ANY of the schools he has applied to. Personally, I think they're all in cahoots...

Found this link for presentations given in Aug 2006. Very interesting for those of you who might like to crunch numbers like myself...bottom line is still a 50/50 for the 'oh holds', either yes or no.

Waiting not fun....fingers and toes are still crossed..good luck to us all

Musta missed some of this thread. In watching the "holds" for the last three years, I've seen all of them that have posted here that they were on hold receive appointments including my kid. Some think the hold status is due to several factors. One, the DODMERB thing. Second, that when the earlier appoinments are given & those kids decline to accept them, it gives space to others the academy wants. That said, it is all in theory really. Been discussed alot though. The numbers the academy puts out there every year for human consumption does not indicate how many "Hold" kids vs. alternate kids that receive appointments & I think thats what MajM was asking about. My kid was an alternate then went to hold, then bounced to principle all within a two week period. I saw three others on this forum do basically the same thing over the years. Then we've seen kids get no status until the "hold" popped up & left everyone scratching heads so we all spent a bunch of time trying to figure it out. It was fun for a while until we figured out application & status stuff are just made to make us all crazy. :D My money is on the "hold" kids having a better than 50/50 chance. ;)

Interesting response Jamzmom, I agree that this just makes us crazy. I do not think they want us to figure it out. As an example, my son went from hold to alternate candidate, to principal in that order. When they advised him that he was an alternate, he had to accept that status within short timeframe(I think one day). After he accepted alternate status it was less than 2 weeks before he got principal offer.

By the way, heard the plebes are taking pkt #10 again tonight..."Recognize 2010"

this is true, we took it again, and were told that liberty for the entire class has been suspended until further notice... go figure. surprising? i think not.

is2day4him...oh well...go enjoy the super bowl game...this too shall pass

remember - restriction builds strong teeth and bones in growing plebes....

:)
