What does one have to do to be a competitive applicant for prestigious scholarships?

Hey guys,

I am a freshman at Johns Hopkins and I am looking to get into a lot of extracurricular activities. I understand that I can’t get a prestigious scholarship trying to force myself to do things; I need to actually enjoy the things that I do. The problem is, I really don’t know where to begin! There are many things that I am interested in but I don’t know what to do with them (e.g, I love sports (esp basketball) and music but I am not good enough to play on the basketball team and I don’t play an instrument). Could you guys give me some advice on how I can start building a foundation to become a successful applicant to prestigious scholarships in the future? Thanks so much!

Are you already in college or have you been accepted for next fall? The best aid comes from the colleges and goes primarily to freshmen. Transfers generally don’t get much and I’m not sure sophomores who are returning to the same school get anything unless their financial situation drastically changes.

Which scholarships did you have in mind? Are you looking ahead to grad school? Unless things have changed dramatically, graduate and professional schools aren’t going to care much about recreational ECs, although they would look favorably upon research, internships, or volunteer work that is related to your major.

I think this is a high school freshman.

Nope. College freshman. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/1775323-vanderbilt-or-johns-hopkins.html#latest

Huh. Ok. The playing sports and music for a prestigious scholarship threw me off. :-?

Because it sounded like something a high school freshman might believe is possible.
