What does "open; restricted" mean?

I have a couple questions..

1.) I want to join a class and under the status it says "open; restricted"... What does that mean?

2.) Also, if I join a waitlisted class, what happens if classes are starting and I do not get moved off the waitlist? What classes would I end up getting? I want to get good professors but is it very likely a spot could open up for me?

“1)” means there is a rule - usually it is that you must be in that major or you must be an upperclassman to take that class.
“2)” If you are registered for 12 credits and waitlisted for an additional 3 credit class, if you don’t move off the waitlist, unless you have specified another plan, you’ll just have the 12 credits you were registered for.

^what if 8 out of 13 hours are in waitlisted classes? All the available professors give hardly any A’s!

Sounds pretty risky to me… I’d have a backup plan and tell the system to swap your existing classes with the classes you want should you get off the waitlists.

You only have five confirmed credits? You can add more classes through the end of the drop add period but you would miss the first days of class. This is not a good plan.

Register yourself for some of those backup classes, the ones you do not prefer, and - as buried alie says - set your waitlist system up to swap so if you get into a waitlist class you are dropped from the class you do not prefer.

If you can’t find the rule that is keeping you out of an “open, restricted” class, call or email the department that the class is being offered through.

Well actually it doesn’t look like any of the classes I need are open. I am supposed to register today at 2:30 and my advisor told me to take

CH 301
GEO 401
UGS 302 or 303
Soc. Sci. or Visual Art

and that is it, but none of them seem open. What to do???

I don’t get what you mean by setting up my waitlist system to swap me, how do i do that?

thanks btw

^^ Kind of in the same boat.

If a single UGS course isn’t open, do I just take one second semester?

I signed up for “Introduction to Psychology” during orientation, and just went to see if there was another time slot that fit better into my schedule, but all of the classes say “open; restricted” - including the one I’m already in.

Anyone know what the problem could be? It wasn’t restricted when I originally signed up.

^^ are you a psych major?
I’m a bio major but i REALLY want to take psych (possible minor/double major, prerequisite, social science req., etc.) but it was restricted to me during registration and add/drop. I just emailed them about it. Online all I saw was some research requirements that I’d gladly do, but I’m not sure if I have to sign up for that before or after school starts.

I’m an English major, but in the same situation… I either want to minor or double-major in Psych. If I’m remembering correctly, at the time I registered, only half of the available intro classes were restricted. Not sure why they all are now. :/
