What does showing interest mean?

A lot of posts talk about how WashU views interest as very important. I’m curious as to what it means to “show interest”. Any clarifications would be appreciated.

going to events, interviews, maybe taking a tour there, etc. Just going to/signing up to whatever events are possible that they host

There is a thread here on CC in which two applicants are asking what is WUSTL like. They both applied and showed no interest at all and were accepted. One even forgot that she had applied.
