what does the admission team look at for admissions? How do they do the process? re-calculate GPA? What is the inside scoope?..I am wanting to apply next year and it would be helpful to know what I should be focusing on.

I dont think Penn recalculate GPAs.

Will you be an international applicant?

no..what do they do in their admissions process.

uhhh they look at an application the same way as any highly selective university.

have lots of ec's and be in top 5% of your class, and u should be good. penn puts more emphasis on character than test scores imho.

this is a very, very dumb thread.

I don't think it's dumb...last year at this time I was clueless about admissions and really wanted to know.

The top 5% thing depends on how many people are in your class. At my school, top five percent is the top 2 people. So far three people have been accepted to Penn and none of us are those two people.

top 10% in a school of 2200 ppl with 500 ppl in graduating class? good enough??

top 10% in a school of 2200 ppl with 500 ppl in graduating class? good enough??

Should be.

What they want: (right from an info. session)

Students who will make an impact
Leadership experience
Rigorous high school curriculum
- Calculus
- Business experience not necessary
Well-rounded
Genuine interest in business, Wharton, and Penn

Oh, forget the stuff like "they need good character"

Here is what you need for real:

1.Rank (Gpa)-Get Val/Sal if possible. Top 5% makes you average. Top 10% is low, but with other good stuff, you can save yourself.

2.Sat/Act/Sat2's-Gun for a 2100 at least, 2250 is better. 2300 best. Get a 700 on all Sat2s if possible. 750 is better. On the ACT get a 32 if possible, 34 is best.

3.EC's-have leadership positions. Class pres is best, but club pres is good also. Try to be well rounded here. Do science stuff if you like it, do math things if you like that. Do what interests you, just do it well. Volunteer a lot. Volunteer work is very important. Do it. Sports are fantastic; Varsity is best. Get a job if possible.Remember Depth, not Breadth. Still, go for both if possible.

4.Essay-Write a good one. Read Harry Bauld's "On Writing the College Admissions Essay" (or something like that, the name escapes me. Check Amazon.

Those are the big 4 things you need. I'm sure I forgot somethings, people can fill them in.

Yeah, those are good unless you are a recurit for sports or your EC is just simply too amazing...

I don't have the first two things on that list........but I still got in....

yeah man,

You are living proof that grades and scores arent everything.

B_B is wrong. They do recalculate GPA. They take out all the non-academic courses such as gym, art, etc.

From what I have gathered, Penn takes GPA very seriously and SAT not-so-seriously. I agree with Sharkbite about #1, although #2 is somewhat exaggerated for Penn in particular. I think they really scale things down, as in 2000+ is one barrier & 2200+ is the second and final barrier.

I think commitment is more important than people realize - even more important than leadership. They want to see that you can live and breathe something your entire high school career and then bring that perspective - hopefully a unique one - to Penn.

I also agree with essays being important, and I think Penn makes an effort to seek out those that really want to go there (e.g. "why Penn").

There will be some people that fulfill all of this and are rejected and there will be some people that meet none of this and are accepted. That's just how it goes.

Yeah, I was deferred ED and spoke to my regional representative and she basically told me how important the essays were because my SATs and GPA are average for Penn. However, I worked tremendously hard on my essays and they really showed my personality and how much I wanted to go to Penn, I am hoping that my amazing senior year will push me into acceptance.

What SAT/GPA did you get knows11?

I got a 2140 and I have about a 4.25 weighted GPA, 3.6ish unweighted
