What does this letter mean?!

I've heard of likely letters...is this one? It would seem kind of cruel if they send me this letter then tell me no?

Dear [me],

Thank you for your interest in North Carolina State University. I am pleased that you have completed your application for undergraduate admission. I want to take this opportunity to wish you well as you make a decision on the best place for your college experience. As you consider your options, I encourage you to discover why so many students have chosen to attend North Carolina State.

NC State has much to offer outstanding students such as yourself, including extensive study abroad experiences, the University Honors Program, the University Scholars Program, undergraduate research options, service learning opportunities, a supportive faculty, friendly students and outstanding alumni. These supplemental activities work in conjunction with our outstanding academic programs to create a college experience that is challenging and richly rewarding.

I extend a special invitation to you and your family to find out more about these and the many other opportunities NC State has to offer by exploring our website and by visiting our campus if you have not already done so. We offer walking campus tours Monday through Friday of each week. Please visit our website for more details, including information on how to register.

Once again I am pleased that you have chosen to apply to NC State. We look forward to providing you with a formal response to your application soon. In the meantime, best wishes on a successful senior year.

Most sincerely,

Thomas H. Griffin
Director of Admissions

Um, they’re offering a campus tour…It’s not a rejection letter or anything. :)

Likely letters are unmistakable in the clarity of their language: “You have a spot awaiting you once decisions are finalized”. Yours doesn’t seem to meet that level. It’s a rather generic “please consider us” marketing letter. Also NCSU isn’t the type of school that would use LLs.

For a discussion of LLs, this thread on Yale’s forum can be of assistance
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/yale-university/804816-quick-facts-about-likely-letters.html

I don’t believe NCSU does likely letters. Could be wrong though.

Oh okay. So what’s the point of the letter? To get me excited about honors, scholars, and stuff then tell me I’m too dumb?

Seems to me to be confirmation on your application and understanding that students apply to a lot of schools, this is a letter to get you to put this particular school on the top of your list. I would also probably add that they might not send this to “everyone” but a computer generated list of scores or perhaps something else? This is, of course, just a guess. But as you and other applicants to the class of 2014 are soon to find out, the shoe will shortly be on the other foot where schools who accepted you will be wondering, do they really want us? It’s called yield and schools hope for good ones in the end.

It’s a form letter that’s sent out to applicants. There is nothing “likely” about the letter. Even a letter with special invitation to visit the school (all expense paid) is not a likely letter. A likely letter would clearly state a spot is reserved for you and most likely a formal acceptance would be forth coming later.

Beta_Fist - I think you are reading too much into it. You will see things like this your whole life, and you just have to cut through the verbiage. In the end it really just says “We got your application. We are a wonderful school in case you didn’t know it already (although why would you have applied then? lol). Come visit, and we’ll let you know our answer later.” I am not trying to be mean or flip, it just is what it is, especially with larger schools like NC State.

I saw your stats on another post you made. I would be completely shocked if you didn’t get into NCSU. Sure, your SAT’s could have been better, but no matter. You will get in. I don’t know about their honors program though, and how hard that is to get into. Not that you asked about that.

This seems like an acknowledgement of receiving your materials. Some colleges send some sort of mail every week or two to keep their names in front of you.

Ok lol. I guess having a week off of school has made me a little antsy :)

I got the same letter. I was confused too

Dear Mr. Griffin

I am delighted that you find me to be an outstanding student. You are correct, I am. I graciously accept your offer of admissions to the University Honors Program and the University Scholars Program. While I appreciate your special invitation for a tour for me and my family, it is not necessary as I have already decided that I am attending. I am thrilled though that I will be able to use your website to register for my fall classes, thanks for bringing that to my attention.

Sincerely
[You]

just kidding!

It’s a standard form letter and doesn’t imply anything regarding a decision. It’s simply a computer generated letter in response to submitting your application.

Haha ClassicRockerDad!

I’m wondering why they JUST sent me this letter though…I got one in Nov. saying they’d received my app…

me too. This one was different than the one i got for confirmation in November
