What does this mean? "Direct enrollment as a pre-major.... in College of Engineering."?

Hello friends,

First congratulations to everyone who is accepted to Ohio State University!

On the admissions letter it says “Direct enrollment as a pre-major… in College of Engineering?” What does this mean? Is it a form of distinction. I am just curious.

The letter makes it sound like it one, but I really am not sure

Apparent benefits seem to be
-assigned to engineering. academic advisor
-enroll in our “first year engineering program”
-have an opportunity in the “Engineering co-op and Internship program”

I am just curious because none of these seem like really any benefits, and I thought I applied as a biomed major for the University Honors Program but this preliminary letter does not seem to indicate either yet?

Any help would be appreciated in helping me understand this matter. Thank you!

It just means you have been accepted into the CoE and will have engineering advisors. It says pre-engineering because you apply to a specific engineering major after a year or so once you meet the gpa requirement. It has nothing to do with honors.

is this a distinction at all @soyunchico ?

I am not exactly sure what you mean. It is good to get in as pre major because not everyone does but you aren’t necessarily unique for getting in.

Being a pre-major means that you are enrolled in the College of Engineering and have an advisor in the College of Engineering, and your survey course will be for whatever engineering major you applied under, but other than that, it isn’t a distinction. You are not officially in whichever engineering major you applied under; just the College itself; essentially, you met the requirements (whether it was your ACT/SAT scores in relevant categories, high school courses you took, and/or GPA) to get directly admitted into the College of Engineering.

Engineering pre-majors all have to apply to their specific engineering major once they meet the requirements for that major; you are not directly enrolled in an engineering major your first semester. So, if you applied to OSU under CSE, and your friend applied to OSU under ECE, and you both got accepted, you are both pre-majors; you aren’t in CSE and your friend isn’t in ECE until you complete your majors pre-reqs and apply for your major. Essentially, you both are pretty much equal, your course work will just differ slightly the first year.

You say you applied as BME. If BME is still the same from when I was a freshman, you’ll have to finish your pre-req classes, maintain a high GPA, and write an essay to get into the BME major. I believe they take a small amount of people, ~100 or even less than that, each year. The GPA cutoff is usually very high, and it’s pretty competitive.

^you might compare that to other schools you are accepted to, that might not limit access to the desired major by number.
