anxiousana - congratulations on all your acceptances so far! I too am from Florida, and my daughter is a freshman at Tulane this year. I can tell you right now that if you have Fl prepaid, Bright Futures and some merit money from FSU and UCF, there is no way that Tulane can even come close to matching those offers. But keep in mind that there are things other than money to compare, and Tulane vs either of those schools is apples and oranges. Consider the size of the student body: 8,000 vs 40,000. Which makes you feel more comfortable? Consider class size: maximum of 50 or freshman lectures of up to 800? Consider location: a plane ride away or a car ride? Can you plan your trips home in advance or do you need to be able to spontaneously jump in a car and head home for the weekend? Consider football: not that important and not that good vs. dominating the social life? The list goes on, so just remember that money is important but certainly not the only factor (if you can afford it) in deciding what is the right place for you to spend the next 4 years.

got the news in the mail today

Deferred

Got my letter today, I was selected as a Distinguished Scholar. $22,000 academic merit scholarship annually and an invitation to the Tulane Honors Program.

This certainly makes the decision even harder!

Hi anxious - Well well. LOL. Congrats on the scholarship, that is awesome. And to get the Honors invite too is a definite plus. I know you have a very tough decision ahead. I am sure you will do great, whichever choice you make. But definitely go for the CSS. It’s a long shot, not because you spread yourself out over many organizations (that might be a plus for all I know), but because I think there are only about 30 awards. In any case, I know you would love Tulane, but certainly one has to be practical about the money too. Anything we CC’ers can do to help, let us know.

*Your application is complete. The Committee on Admission is working to render your decision as quickly as possible. If you have questions regarding your status, please call the Undergraduate Admission Office at 800-873-WAVE (9283). *

Someone posted that they had had this message on their application status, but this has been on my page for OVER TWO MONTHS. I haven’t heard anything good or bad through the mail, but seriously, what does this mean? Am I deferred…? I expected to get a letter from Tulane last week, but like I said, I haven’t heard anything.

The tension is killing me!

Satiravelvet - Most people that have gotten that turned out to be deferred, but some people that thought they applied EA accidentally applied RD instead and so got put into a “pile” that they are still getting through. If you haven’t e-mailed your adcom yet, you should do so right away, although now with the holiday basically here you might not hear back until after the New Year.

I’m not sure if this is correct, but there seems to be different language involved with the Gibson postings. The one my daughter received, and then matsuma received, both said “rendering a decision…April 1st the latest,” or something to that effect - naming a date. My daughter did receive a deferral. However, the language above, “rendering a decision as quickly as possible,” seems to be what anxiousana had and she was accepted, so…don’t lose hope!

Sorry, I meant Matsum91, not matsuma!

satira, ds has had that same wording for months, too. I’m taking it as a good sign. When we called, they said to expect a decision end of December/January.

That would seem to indicate the RD pile, rather than deferred.

As I read a lot of these posts, I realize that my daughter was lucky that she applied so early to Tulane (although she still applied to other schools). She applied online the first day the application was available (end of August) and heard by the end of September that she had been accepted. My advice to anybody applying for fall 2011 would be to apply ED as early as possible. The application usually comes out at the end of August, and it is such an easy application that it doesn’t take much time to complete. Since ED is non-binding, I don’t see any disadvantge to applying early.

You mean EA. ED (which Tulane does not have) is binding. Tulane has two early options, SCEA (Single Choice Early Action) in which you are promising Tulane you are not applying EA anywhere else. Still non-binding, but tells Tulane that you are very seriously considering them, probably a top 3 choice. EA is just non-binding for early notification.

Yep, I indeed meant Early Action. Thanks.
