Hello there. I am applying to St. John's PA program and I am having some difficultly understanding the essay prompt.

What motivates you? We'd like to know what activities you really enjoy. Do they tie in with any career goals? Have you won any awards or honors?
(The first question is in bold)

I do not understand how the first two questions can be related so that I could answer it in one cohesive essay. Please help me. Thank You.

To me, it looks like they’re asking if you’ve followed up your personal interests with activities. For example, if you really love music and creating music motivates you, how have you been involved in that? Something along those lines.

I would say “what motivates you” is likely a broader theme - “helping people”, “making people happy”, “money”, “fame”, “being challenged”, “learning new things”, etc. Then you need to relate that to what you choose to do with your time.

Then you can tie it to your activity. Here is a relatively silly example…

I am motivated to become famous, that is why I am passionate about being a reality TV star. I participated in a local talent show and posted several videos on YouTube in hopes that one would go viral…

Thank you for your responses!

Do you think it would be fair if I were to rephrase the first two questions as
“Why do you do what you do?”
