see in an applicant?

tour the school or search the website. they want a good student with dedication to their ECs

UCLA primarily looks for high-GPA applicants with a passion for one or two specific ECs. The School of Engineering secondarily looks for high SAT I Math and high SAT II Math IIC/Physics/Chemistry/Biology scores as well.

an academically capable student (solid test scores and GPA, but not necessarily the BEST) who will contribute to campus life (as demonstrated by commitment in extracurriculars).

Yeah. To parapharase JFK, it's not what UCLA can do for you, but it's what you can do for UCLA (in terms of getting into UCLA). After you get in, then you can turn that around :)

I got into UC, so heres my take:

1) Take a ton of APs, doesnt matter if you pass the exams

2) Do a ton of volunteer work and have a bunch of ECs even if you dont care about them

3) Get a high GPA by sucking up to teachers and doing all the extra credit you can.

4) Study for SAT by taking a class and drilling practice books.

5) Try to do a summer program at a UC of your choice and then write your personal statement about that.

Good luck!

wow...sounds so...superficial jimmy =P haha

i'm just kidding...along the same lines...GPA/ECs/SAT...it's pretty much the same for most colleges including UCLA (except overcoming personal obstacles seem to be particularly outstanding @ UCLA...so if you did it, include it!)

lol "what can you do for ucla"

flopsy- you said we should have a passion for a couple of ucla's EC...
well i dont know if you have heard of Bruin Bhangra, but that is totally something i am passionate about and something that i really want to get involved in if i get into UCLA. so should i talk about this in my app???

No, because the same application goes to all of the UCs you send an app. flopsy didn't say UCLA's ECs...?

peanut_butter: ucapplicant05 is right. Unless you only plan to apply to UCLA among the UCs, do not mention an activity that's unique to a certain campus. That being said, I don't think that mentioning this activity in your essay will help in getting into UCLA. Talk about activities you took part in during high school and if possible, demonstrate leadership in these activities. Good luck.

I participated in five ECs throughout high school (NHS, girl scouts, tutoring, Drill Team, band) but my only two serious ones were Drill Team and band. So, I emphasized those in my essays. I'd held a leadership position in DT and was first chair flute in band, and I talked about what I had done for those groups and the experience I received in return.
Main point: don't bother trying to do anything and everything. Spread yourself out a little, but focus on what YOU are passionate about. If you've been true to yourself, it will come across in your application.

Thanks for the input!! =)

i agree with many of the comments that the previous people made. there just need be something in your application that makes you different from the other applicaints; it's not always about the numbers [ GPA, SAT, AP ]. sure, you can easily grab 100 people with the same GPA, SAT & AP scores as you, but how many can you grab out of the applicant pool that makes you YOU?

but im not suggesting that you start making up things in your application to make yourself stand out. just be true to yourself, and care about the things you write in your application.

I personally think themes are good, as long as you aren't spelling things out for them (and you actually, like, have a theme to yourself).

I went for the creative strong independent woman approach. One of my essays was about Scarlett O'Hara/our similar qualities and one was about my love for writing/something very bad I did to a Barbie when I was younger. My two main EC's in high school were 4 years of student government and theatre. If Scarlett + writing + anti Barbie + theatre + govt don't equal a creative strong independent woman, I don't know what does.

You add that to top grades, ranking, SAT's and course work (full IB diploma for me) then you've got a nice package.

Well rounded, but focused.

good job fiddledd...confident but not arrogant ;)

Hahaha yeah right. But you sell yourself in a CC post the same way you sell yourself in an application, right?
