How is it different than regular business or regular economics major? What kinds of jobs can bizecon majors get? WHo are the major recruiters for bizecon majors at UCLA? =D

Biz Econ at UCLA is more like Econ/Accounting. There is no Business major at UCLA.

Yes, what yahooo said is right.

BizEcon is different from Econ in the sense that BizEcon combines Econ and Accounting. There is also a special series of Econ classes (the Econ 106 series) that is limited to BizEcon majors only. Some Econ 106 classes include Finance (106F), Investments (106V), and Economics of Entrepreneurship (106E).

Some recruiters of BizEcon students include Investment Banking, Consulting, and Accounting firms.

Would you say, in terms of employment and the well-roundedness of this major in preparing for MBA, that ucla's bizecon major is just as good as econ at cal?

Yes, the UCLA BizEcon program can prepare you for an MBA just as much as the Econ major at Cal.

im sorry if i am asking too much, but could you give me some back-up, evidence or reasons why you think that is?

Sure, no problem.

First of all, a Business or Econ undergrad major doesn't improve your chances of getting into an MBA program vis a vis other majors. In fact, I read somewhere that the most common undergraduate major that Business School students have is Engineering, with Business and Econ is 2nd place. (If you search hard enough, I'm sure you'll find this data somewhere online).

Business Schools will accept any major; they just want to see excellent work experience, GMAT scores, and undergrad GPA. If you are a liberal arts major, I think Business Schools would recommended taking some quantitative classes (Econ, Accounting, Math).

My point is, the UCLA Biz Econ program would help you just as much as the Cal Econ program, because any major can get you into an MBA. Just take some basic quantitative courses, have a great GPA, GMAT score, extra-curriculars, leadership and team experience, and work experience, and you can get into an MBA program whether you are a Poli Sci major, an Engineering major, or an Econ/BizEcon major.

wow thanx so much your replies are very helpful!

How easy would it be to land employment after graduating with a biz-econ degree from ucla? Do many companies recruit at ucla for these graduates, and if they do, what are the chances of them hiring you compared to other biz-econ graduates from ucla, or other econ graduates from other universities such as cal, HYPS, etc...

I'm mainly concerned about career opportunities with this degree, as my friend graduated from UCLA with econ degree and she said it is pretty difficult to get a job...I'm not sure if this is accurate or not =T

Econ/International Area Studies right herrrrr!!!!

The ease of finding employment with a BizEcon degree depends on many factors, such as your GPA and experience. I'm pretty sure an employer such as an Ibanking firm or a Consulting firm would prefer a UCLA BizEcon grad with a 3.7 GPA and outstanding ECs, experience, and internships over a HYPS econ grad with a 2.95 GPA and mediocre ECs and experience.

Of course, if 2 students had equal GPAs, ECs, experience, and internships, except one is a UCLA BizEcon major while the other is a HYPS Econ major, then of course the HYPS grad will most likely be chosen.

My point is, it won't be difficult to find a job with a UCLA Econ or BizEcon degree as long as you have great grades and great experience and can sell yourself well to a prospective employer.

for the most part, bizecon=future i-bankers.

I'm not really interested in acctg, but I think I'm going to do biz econ. I've heard that most reg econ majors are the ones who can't make into biz econ. Is that true?

dream on bruinboy.

To quote from the UCLA website:

"A few of the many career paths that recent Department of Economics graduates have pursued are accounting, finance, investment banking, management consulting, international trade and law."

3rd paragraph in http://cis.ucla.edu/studyArea/course.asp?type=MAJ&code=246

worriedsenior, I guess you could say that's true for the most part. Although some Econ majors originally intended to do just the regular Econ major, a lot of BizEcon aspirants who fail to make the grade would usually end up in regular Econ (I myself am in this category).

so is it THAT hard to make the...i believe it's 3.3 gpa... for biz econ?

are most people able to land a job after graduation easily, or is there still a lot of competition?

The Business Economics majors are the cream of the crop, and the pride and glory of UCLA. They are recruited for the best jobs out of graduation, at least from the Big Four accounting firms... The plain Economics majors are seen as an inferior caste -- an Untermensch if you will -- akin to the students who are rejected from Haas at UC Berkeley. This is all word of mouth, but it's pretty consistent among those in the know at this school.

Yay go biz-econ majors!

as fastMed stated, ibanking is a DREAM. VERY VERY few people in bizecon will land a six figure paying ibanking job (even though almost everyone declaring it as a pre-major wants to get these jobs). Bizecon also seems to be one of the toughest majors to get into. You need to take some pretty difficult courses and there is a very high cutoff for gpa.

*don't get discouraged. if you make it all the way through you will be generously rewarded...

feels utterly screwed for not being able to make it into Biz-econ :(
