Back in my day, the OOS students invariably called it “Michigan” and the in-state students split between “Michigan” and “U of M.” Those other Universities of M . . . . were just not very much on the in-staters’ minds. And no one called it “UMich.” We didn’t have umich.edu websites or e-mail addresses because Al Gore hadn’t yet invented the Internet.
I wonder why they called it umich.edu and not michigan.edu. The latter isn’t even taken.
UIUC’s is illinois.edu. UVa’s is virginia.edu.
I might be able to understand upenn.edu since pennsylvania.edu is a bit long (not entirely sure why they didn’t use penn.edu, but that address still redirects to the university’s site anyway).
I agree with @momofthreeboys that “umich” is a bit weird to say.
Michigan or U of M (pronounced like U ev M lol)
In Detroit area, it is U of M, or Michigan. The Michigan State is just “State”.
Like @ Ashray said, it’s more one word with two syllables, UveM.
