What does USC most commonly refer to?

South Carolina or Southern California? Every time a friend writes "ACCEPTED TO USC!!!!" as their facebook status, I never know which one they're talking about.

It depends.

If you go to a high school South Carolina, I would assume that most of your classmates are talking about the University of South Carolina.

Otherwise, it mostly refers to Southern California in most contexts.

Living in the Midwest and West Coast, USC has always meant Southern Cal to me.

Southern Cal. Trojans. ;)

I will suggest to the South Carolina [university] to change the name…to SCU
Instead of USC for “University of Southern California”.

Anyone wants to start a movement for this change?

Are the colors the same–gold and red?

South Carolina has red and white/black.

Even here in the South, whenever I hear USC most everyone assumes Southern Cal, unless they’re specifically talking about South Carolina or you’re in South Carolina, obviously.

Its funny because University of South Carolina had the name in 1801. University of So Cal was founded almost 80 years later.

Only in the deep south will you hear USC referring to South Carolina.

And in South Carolina, it is the only place where people will not stare at you when you yell GO C O C K S!!!

I think ESPN abbreviates Southern Cal as USC and South Carolina as SC.

They have schools in South Carolina now?

They have schools in the south now?

^as in gamecocks? :P

Lol, is that really so common an occurrence?

Southern Cal unless somethings in the conversation would lead me to believe otherwise.

maroon and yellow vs. maroon and black

“Lol, is that really so common an occurrence?”

Yeah 3 different friends, 1 lives in the South and 2 in the Northeast like me (different school). None of them are especially smart, so I wasn’t quite sure.

Technically South Carolina is garnet and black. And ESPN abbreviates it “SCAR”.

Yes, the University of South Carolina existed before California was even a state. So it doesn’t really make sense to have them change their name. Besides, no one suggests that Tennessee or Texas changes from UT.

University of Spoiled Children.

There is already a SCSU but usually no one has ever heard of it. South Carolina State University.
