I’m really interested in business, and Wharton’s my first choice. From everything I’ve heard, it’s nearly impossible to get in. But I was wondering if Wharton acceptees could help me out by maybe posting your stats, and answer a few questions I have.

Does Wharton look more at grades/GPA or leadership positions?

How important are SAT scores, and will having a really high score increase my chances tremendously?

I'm not a pro, but from what I've noticed (perhaps someone better can add to this)...

-Really high grades (usually top 1%)...but there are exceptions
-Most SAT scores are above 1500, but there were some that were valedictorian/salutorian that had 1300s/1400s...I think if youre not a val/sal you pretty much need a 1500
-1400 SAT puts you in the game; 1500 gives you a good chance, & 1580-1600 would be a plus, but it does not mean def. admission.
-Couple people w/ lower scores have their own businesses...serious businesses that make lots of money
-Math, math, math -- Calc BC, SAT I, SAT IIC, etc
-Leadership of some kind, doesn't necessarily have to be at school, is a must

I think that's about right, and there are exceptions to every rule...anyone can feel free to correct me.

The SAT scores & GPA can move inversely to some degree. Thus, many people do have 1500+ but have a gpa less than the high 3.9s and they aren't ranked in the top 1% or higher in their class. As you get closer to perfect[val/sal and usually those ranked #3-5 in a competitive school], SAT scores in the 1400s become more acceptable. There are lots of qualifications to all of this--if you have a 4.0 uw but have 0 AP classes, even though your school offers lots of them, that's going to hurt you and it may be a hurdle you can't overcome, even with high SAT scores.

As for leadership, it goes beyond the usual measures of leadership. They seem to realize that being president of a club at school isn't always hard as it may be an election due to popularity and can often entail little/no responsibility. Thus, being the president/VP of a few school clubs or captain of a sports team isn't an automatic check in the leadership box. You need to be able to justify 1-2 of those positions either in your essay/in an addendum to the application and really tell them what you did in that group, what new initiatives you started up etc. It seems like this is something that keeps those with the right stats out of wharton. Many applicants have lots of clubs and sports teams, a few officer positions and captain positions and seem like perfect applicants. But they don't/can't really tell much about the leadership experiences from those activities. In contrast, many get in who have fewer activities than you would think would be acceptable, but significant involvement in each one.

Also, being a girl isn't a significant factor. The ratio of men-women is about 60-40 [at least for the frosh class]. Sure they may want to get the ratio up to 50-50 but its not something you can rely on to heavily.

what if i'm ranked 6/320, with a 32 ACT, NO SAT, but PERFECT MATH SCORES, i mean, perfect-36, 800ic, 800iic.
does that fit into the "ok-stats-category"?

how can you assume that you are getting perfect mathscores? did you already get them? Also, a 32 overall does seem a little low if you got a perfect math.

well, i havent* gotten th SAT IIs perfects yet haha, but i have on the ACT
i've gotten perfects on like 5/7 practice tests Math SAT II i took (except barrons arghh)

experience from the three that got in this year from my graduating HS class:

one was a dual legacy, recruited for baseball, and isnt going (no way he woulda gotten in without that much help, GPA sucked)

another had 3.85uwgpa, asian male.15something SAT. what did it for him was leadership- 4 years class prez, 2-3 years varsity bball captain, prez of amnesty intl club, and then like a thousand hours comm service

the third was an asian female, 1600 SAT, uwgpa around 3.95, took like 9 AP test by the end of junior year, numerous model un/model congress awards, prez of model un/model congress clubs, student rep to board of ed, plus shes one of those mysterious people that probably did crazy stuff outside of school that you dont know about. honestly, she doesnt have many friends at my school so she must have. (added bonus: got into the ultra-prestigious huntsman joint degree program)

I am a Chinese American and I got into Wharton '09 with a decent GPA (90ish out of 99), 1520 SAT I, 770 Wri, 710 US Hist, 670 Math IC, 660 Math IIC, Leadership positions (pres. of student body), work experience (mortgage company). But as you can see, my math scores were a bit low. You just have to show Penn that you want to be there badly.

32 ACT with an 800iic SATII is a pretty safe set of scores. I got in with scores quite a bit worse... But then again, 32 ACT doesn't really stand out either, and almost everyone(besides me) seems to get 800 on iic.
