What does your status page say?

^ That is the first notification shown after your app has been received. After that you will have a "preliminary review completed" one, followed by "is being reviewed". When the decision is in the mail, you will have "acted on app".
Ofcourse you still have a chance for acceptance, there's still plenty of time.

"Your application is being reviewed by the admission committee. We will mail notification of their decision by April 1. If for some reason you don't receive our written notice, we will be happy to provide the results over the phone beginning April 11th.

Finally!

I hate to rain on anybody's parade (including mine, by the way) but I think the first wave is over. The status of all accepted applicants changed on the same date, even at similar times, which means that USC processes accepted applications in batches, the first of which is done now. So I'm pretty sure it'll be a while until we see more acceptances here.

By the way: can applicants accepted in the second wave still be awarded a scholarship?

^ If it's anything like last year...Yes.
We are not even into February yet and last year those accepted in the first couple of weeks in Feb were up for scholarships.

I just called the USC Admissions Office and asked about my status wondering if it meant that I still needed to send in any additional things. She said no and that my application looked perfectly fine as it was now. She did note that it was strange for it to be in "preliminary review" for so long although she stated that it could just mean that they haven't acted upon it yet. The woman then said that she would check into it and it would most likely change so that she could prove that "we're still alive here at USC."

Well, I faxed over my science abstract that I had sent to all the schools except USC, oops. Hopefully, that might help me out. :o

TheBarron12, mine has been stuck since 1/24 also... this sucks

Mine's been "preliminary review completed" since 12/19. Something tells me it's not going to change anytime soon. ;__;

i love calling them.. its so weird, i mean i can get home from school at like 3:30 and call them around 730 at night and they'll still be there!! (b/c its 430 on the west) cracks me up all the time..

at this point I probably shouldn't read too much into things, but like any anxious applicant I'm trying to read the tea leaves here

It's been 12 days. I'm starting to wonder if this is indicative of having been considered for an invitation to interview for a scholarship and having been passed over. Your thoughts?

Considering I ended up with a single sitting SAT score in the high 2300s, a gpa around 3.9, several dedicated extra-curriculars, more than six 5s on AP tests, decent recs, and so on I was mildly surprised. Obviously at such a competitive school there are no guarantees, but I felt like my stats gave me a fairly decent chance of being interviewed for a presidential scholarship. (There is intentional vagueness here on the off chance that these get skimmed by admissions officers. Granted this is a bit paranoid, but the last paragraph was slightly presumptuous.)

I'm particularly disappointed because USC was among my top two schools and is one that I simply can't afford otherwise.

p.s. total shout out to tanya for suggesting the site. It's a good diversion. Good luck dear.

silverlining- You still have a shot at the Dean's scholarship, and given your stats, you have a fairly good chance.

My status changed to "currently reviewing" on 1/29/08. I agree with awelex. The first wave is probably over, so now all we can do is sit and hope that we get our acceptance letters before April.

sliverlining- on paper, you really do look like a scholarship candidate but, of course, you never know.

Just FYI- Last year, on about Feb. 8, USC sent a letter to all applicants (who had submitted their application before the Dec. 10 scholarship deadline) who would not be receiving one of the major scholarships. We called it the "no-scholarship letter." It was obviously not a desired letter, but at least then we knew we were out of that race.

Good luck on that scholarship- until you get that letter, it's not over yet.

I'm thinking that the people in the first wave probably submitted their apps at least a week before the Dec 10 deadline (and had the stats). Hopefully the second wave will come out this weekend (judging from what occurred last year).

saeraxD- So from what you're saying, you believe there's a second wave of scholarships?

I'm hoping there is.

From what I remember last year (I applied to USC last year under the RHP program - and I remember stressing out about not getting a letter until March), people started getting notified about their acceptances the last Saturday of January. And then there were those people worrying that they didnt get in, and then a couple days later (early february) people posted that they got notified about their acceptances. And then after that, I am pretty sure, that the next wave is early March.

"We have completed a preliminary review of your application. We sometimes request additional information (senior-year grades, for example), so be sure to watch the mail. You may submit senior year grades at www.usc.edu/MDYResponse, even if we did not specifically request them. We are continuing to review applications and expect to mail notification of a decision by April 1st."

Is this a bad sign for me or something?

^^ i'm with you on that... it says the exact same thing for me... i'm NOT sending my grades, it dropped a bit.. i blame AP Physics, AP Calc BC and AP Lit

Last updated Jan 14... 16 days ago!!!

Silverlining, I'm in the same boat as you... they updated mine on the same day, about 3 minutes later than you!

11 days - seriously? If it's a good thing - I wanna know. If it's a bad thing - I WANNA KNOW!

Geez.......

Guys mine says:

We received the fall grades we requested, and require no additional information at this time. We will mail decisions to freshman applicants by April 1st.

My semester's not even done yet! What could this mean?

tubaman93- Did you send in anything by accident or did your counselor send in anything? If not, contact USC and straighten things out. You don't want some random person's grades on your application.

I had a somewhat confusing conversation with an admissions helpline person today, and came away with a few bits of info to pass along. (I think these phone-counselor folks have had a very busy week, and I'm impressed that USC makes it so easy to actually talk to someone about this process, however confusing it might be.)

Applying to a major with an extra review process could be slowing things down for some people. This person said the majority of recipients of the early letters had been from CLAS or undecided, with a few from Cinematic Arts, Marshall and others. I can't remember if she talked about Viterbi. She said the SCA (School of Cinematic Arts) does try to coordinate its review process to be able to do scholarship interviews along with the rest of the 17 colleges, but was free to hold off and do its own interview process later on. This was news to me - I've never heard of anyone getting Trustee or Presidential by a separate process. This part of the conversation was confusing, to say the least. There was some reluctance to discuss the process by which the different Colleges decide these things, but the clear message was that if you applied to film, you're kind of stuck with a slower process, and you shouldn't read anything into a lack of action on the application.

This person did say the office had continued to send off acceptances this week - up until Wednesday - and that those are most likely tied to Presidents and Trustees. Wednesday: that would be today, and she seemed to say this meant it would be received by Wednesday, as a bunch were mailed Monday. Again, not totally clear if the mailing was ongoing up til Wednesday, but it does sound like this will be the end of the first wave.

"Completed preliminary review" - according to my person - just means the applicant has done what he needs to do. Not good, not bad.

So.... We have not given up all hope regarding the chance to go to Explore USC and interview for a scholarship, but we're very glad that my S has a good chance of being a National Merit Finalist. USC is very high on his list!
