So I’m going to attend Davis in the fall as a Freshman I’ve been having trouble deciding on what dorm to choose. So I’m hoping some of the current/alumni students can help me out…

Here are some stuff I want to consider when choosing a dorm, so please help!

-I’m majoring in Animal Science
-I don’t party, so a dorm/hall that doesn’t really have a reputation for throwing loud, drunken parties please…
-I want to meet new people

That’s all I can really think about. I guess the most important one is the party situation. I’m not sure how much parties are thrown at UC Davis, but I really not a “party” type person. If anyone could write suggestions and such here, it would really help me! Thanks for anyone who answers. :)

Hi!! OMG IM MAJORING ANIMAL SCIENCE TOOO!!! I’m still deciding whether I should go there or not… and I’m scare it might be too competitive >A< But I would like to see the recommendations for housing too :D

Regarding parties: Usually people go to them off campus and come back drunk, if they’re smart. If they’re not, then usually they’ll get written up because of noise and/or alcohol.

Since not getting involved in any of the party stuff is a big concern for you, I’d suggest thinking about the substance free/quiet program housing programs. The people tend to be friendly and while still some will party, it will be a much lower % of people than in the general population.

Congratulations on getting into Davis! You will have an amazing college career as an animal science major…trust me!

You want to pick something in Tercero to live in FOR SURE. Most animal science classes are close to these dorms…everything else is waaaaay too far away and it will take you forever to walk or bike to.

People don’t really throw parties in the dorms…the RAs will get on their backs for that and write them up on noise violations. And they are violation happy, but if you get one, all you do is just talk to a senior RA and “promise” it won’t happen again. There’s a myth that if you get 5, you get kicked out of the dorm…not true…but that doesn’t mean you should be loud because people want to study and do well as much as they want to have fun.

If you want to meet new people, I would suggest living with a room mate or two. This is the best way to meet people, because the more people you know in the beginning, the more people you’ll meet through them. Most people are pretty outgoing and proactive when they move into the dorms, so DON’T be shy or feel awkward introducing yourself. In fact, that’s the best thing to do. It’s weird in high school to do that, but it’s weird in college if you don’t.

Thanks for the answers! I have another question though. How exactly do I sign up for housing? Will Davis send something out? I’m not really sure how to sign up for housing. And, when do I rank which dorms I want and the halls? I know there are certain “themes” for some of the Dorms’ halls. How do I choose? And is there a website I can read about the different dorms/hall’s themes?
