What Dorm Preferences Did You Pick?

I was wondering what dorms other incoming Freshmen chose for CMU on their housing applications.
For my top three I chose:
Mudge
Morewood E
Donner

I chose:

Morewood E
Donner
Mudge

Morewood E first because I like the overall convenience. Donner second because big rooms and proximity convenience. I put Mudge third only because I only really wanted a quad from Mudge and don’t want to end up with a prime double or so and pay extra since I already don’t like my debt coming out of CMU already.

I paid my deposit April 1st, so hopefully I get my first choice.

here’s a another good question. What about personal preferences?

I put Room Purpose (Social and Study) > Morning/Night person (Night) > Cleanliness (Once or twice a week) in that order of importance.

Personal preferences could use a couple more questions in my opinion.

Yea, I was hoping they had more questions because those three questions won’t be sufficient enough to link people with “good” roommates. I put the same order for the personal preferences, but I put Varies for the Morning/Night person. I actually should change it because I am a night person, but I was afraid I would get someone who would keep me up the ENTIRE night. I probably will change it since I can.

I put my deposit in April 7th so I don’t know how lucky I will be at getting Mudge, but I would actually be happy with either of my first two.

Personal preferences are mostly a waste of time for a couple reasons:

They’re rarely used.

Even if they were used, the way people answer those questions is entirely subjective, because you’re answering based on what kind of person -you- think you will be. You are answering them hypothetically. For example, answering “how many times a week do you plan to clean the room” with “every day” might make sense if that’s what you do at home with your own room - but once you’re at college and are cramming for exams and papers, and going out on the weekends, that’s probably going to change and drift. It’s just a fact of life. And your definition of ‘cleaning’ might be ‘take out the trash,’ while someone else’s definition might be ‘clean EVERYTHING, do all of my laundry, sort the fridge…’

Same with “morning/night person”-- one person’s definition of ‘night person’ might mean, “I go to bed around four and I plan to go out every night. I might bring someone home with me.” Another person’s might be, “I stay up late studying intensely and listening to music on my headphones.” These two people are obviously totally different in terms of lifestyle – even though they both chose “night person,” they’re not really compatible as roommates.

My advice? Go to Facebook to look for a roommate. Odds are good that the 2015 class group is already full of activity. Don’t wait to be auto-matched with someone. I decided to live in a quad freshman year, and I found three other girls to live with. One of them left the school almost immediately, one I lived with again this year, and one I’m living with again next year. It worked out really happily for me, all things considered.

^ Yeah I’ve already started looking into that.

I decided to go on facebook and try too.
