What dorm should I choose?

I've heard that Morgan doesn't have a laundry room, and that they converted it from doubles to triples so it's really crowded. But I like the fact that the dining hall is there.

The website says these are the dorm possibilities for freshmen:

* Daniels Hall
* Founders Hall
* Institute Hall
* Morgan Hall
* Sanford-Riley Hall
* Stoddard Complex

Do you have any other recommendations?

Thanks!

My son was in Morgan as a freshman - the first year they switched from doubles to triples. Since the room was pretty large for a double, it wasn’t too crowded as a triple. Son didn’t complain. I’m pretty sure the laundry is in Daniels, which is connected to Morgan, so it’s not that long a hike. Not that son used the laundry facilities all that much.

Morgan, Daniels, and Riley are all very convenient to everything. The others are somewhat downhill, geographically, from campus.

S was in Daniels. Very convenient to everything. Room was decent sized, but who could tell with 2 guys and all their high tech stuff crammed in?!

My niece is in a triple in Morgan this year. No complaints about the room. Haven’t specifically asked about the laundry.

I don’t recall that my daughter had a real choice. The form didn’t ask which dorm, just whether you wanted a single, double or triple. She put down for a double and ended up in Morgan in a triple. All the girls on the floor were triples except for the RA. She and her roommates are tight but not overcrowded in the room. It would have been extremely roomy as a double.

I believe that a lot of the freshman (girls anyways) were assigned to triples as they had a much larger incoming freshman class than they had planned for (ie got a better yield than anticipated).

She has already signed a lease on an apartment with a cople of her friends for next year. She like to cook and the dorms have no or limited cooking facilities and none for the freshman dorms.

Although I do not go to WPI, I took part in a summer program there last year. All of the kids were put into Morgan so I have some experience of staying there. I thought it was very nice, there was just one thing that really annoyed me and just about everyone else in the program. As previously mentioned, Morgan used to have doubles but now the rooms are triples. Because of this, all of the beds are bunk beds, and they could not be lowered because the desks are underneath them. Basically, you don’t have much room on top of the beds for anything really. I was accepted to WPI, and if I do choose to go there, I would probably go for a dorm with doubles. Of course, that’s just my opinion.

THANKS for the info. I hope Daniels has some double rooms because that sounds like the best option, although Morgan sounds survivable. (Wonder if there would be room for a fridge/microwave in those triple rooms?) I like the idea of the Theme Houses, but probably not for my freshman year.

S was in Morgan his first year, a triple and one roomate brought a fridge, micro, and flat screen TV - they made it work without too much trouble

There is no real choice. You just state a preference. In S’s case he wanted Morgan because it was convenient so he was told by someone who seemed to know that his chances of getting it were good if he said he wanted a LARGE co ed dorm.

You can probably figure out what things you would want to request depending on which dorms you are most interested in.

Next year you will either enter the housing lottery or move off campus. The lottery is just as it sounds. If you have a low number, you have a better chance of choosing your room and dorm. Those in the know put together combos (I am not sure how the theme houses work - but I would suppose there needs to be a vacancy) and whoever gets the lowest number brings the rest of their combo with them. S was in a 6 person combo this year and they got into one of the suites in Founders. The ones who had the lower numbers or who had gatthered the combo chose rooms first - so S got a single in a 4 bedroom suite that houses 2 doubles and 2 singles. It worked out well for him. Next year could be another story

S is currently living in a theme house, which he enjoys quite a bit and will probably be in again next year. His room has some very interesting architectural features, including built-in bookshelves and a fireplace (non-functioning).
