What dorms are best??

Cornellians, what dorms do you suggest the incoming freshmen try to get into?

I believe it's done at random unless you choose the town houses or the program houses.

well then... as a girl... would you choose the balch or other dorms?

I would definately say the Mews and Court are the best. They are the newest and janitors clean the bathrooms for you!! You can't pick a dorm, but if you apply as early as possible for housing, you will get the best dorm.

When do we get to choose dorms?

Not true. For freshmen, as long as you submit your housing application before the deadline and you don't go for a program house or townhouse, it's pretty much all random.
Mews and Court are the newest, but they also have among the smallest rooms. Janitors clean all the bathrooms for us anyway.

you don't get to choose your dorm, and there is no way to increasse your chances at anything by applying early or whatever. as long as it's before the deadline, you're good. Balch is quiet...there are no guys, girls tend to be less rowdy when they're sober IMO. Balch has huge rooms and is beautiful. If that's your thing, then it's a dream, but if you want a more social environment and guys around then you don't want balch

One of my (on leave at college) employees is a female freshman at Cornell. She lives in Donlon, but told me over Christmas that she now thinks she should have requested Balch. She feels that the 'social environment' is distracting and there are plenty of guys around anyway!

When we toured the campus last summer, I adored Balch. It looks like my own college dorm. There's something about a dorm with a living room lounge that looks like an elegant old mansion that's appealing as a place to come home to everyday.

balch is beautiful, but i'm sorry to say that there aren't guys around...like they can be there, but they don't just pass through or chill like in the other dorms.

Guess it depends on how you define 'around' ...
<smile></smile>

I know that if you submitt your housing request early you have the best chance of getting what you want (like a single, etc.) I would have to say that Mews and Court are the best. They are the newest, the only dorms that are air conditioned, and even though the rooms are smaller, they are clean. The bathroom set-up is much more livable than in Donolon, I think, and athough the architecture isn't as pretty as Balch and Dickson they are really nice.

Are u a 100% sure? Coz if I remember correctly, the housing form says that no such preference is made if u submit it by the deadline.

That is absolutely not true emilyanne. As long as you submit your form before the housing deadline you are in the same boat as everyone else. If you submit after the deadline you're even less likely to get what you want, but for freshman housing, it's not a first-come first-serve process.

Be honest on your housing form about what type of person you are (although I seriously doubt they pay attention to it).
Look at all the program houses if you're interested in those.
Ditto what everyone else said about Balch, the randomness in getting what you want, and etc.

"when they're sober." Ha. True.

Get a single, for sure.

Housing is RANDOM for freshman. The time that you submit the application has no effect on it whatsoever.

In terms of dorms, Court and Mews are really new and have heat, which is nice. The suite setup has its advantages, but it's a bit harder to meet people than if you get in a dorm where there are rooms on a hall.

I think for freshman, places like Dickson and Donlon are the best. Rooms are a bit bigger, and there are always lot of people around.

However, you really can't go wrong with any of those four. The townhouses too have their advantages, but the location is bad and it is even harder to meet people. The Low and High rises aren't the best either, but none are terrible.

are there like single halls... and if you have a single are there usually a lot of other singles in the hall? How does it work exactly

AJKates, I hope you meant air conditioning. If all the dorms don't have heat, I might have to reconsider Cornell hah.

Litagee, Dickson is mostly singles with a few triples scattered throughout.

Live, I think all the dorms have heat; I have a crappy radiator that emits a burnt pizza-like odor. Luckily, I enjoy being cold and don't use it except when I have people over who request it.

so would I have a good chance of getting into Dickson if i requested a single? Or are there a lot of singles in all the other ones
