I’m currently a high school freshman with a 4.0 gpa. This year I was involved in track and field, church activity, and speech and debate club.
As far as next year (sophomore year) I’m taking AP English and science. I also plan on doing all the same extracurriculars as well as maybe STEM club (science, tech, engineering, math), ASB (student gov), community service club, and maybe another sport.
So what else should I do to increase my chances of getting accepted into UCLA? Thanks:)
Way too early to tell… Just focus on doing well on your SAT/ACT, take many AP’s to show that you’re well-rounded and able to withstand college courses, and be more involved in school/take part in organizations, etc.
Yes–too early to tell, and you should definitely continue to get good grades and shoot for excellent SAT/SAT II/AP scores.
I’ve watched UCLA (like other elite schools) become enormously competitive over the last decade, so part of this depends on who you are. If you are a Californian coming from a top tier high school, UCLA will be harder to get to than if you’re coming from a small town in Kansas. To improve your chances of getting in, I’d suggest becoming president of a major school club, doing well enough in your sport to be recognized, finding extracurricular options that are off-campus where you can excel, winning awards – all the usual hallmarks of excellence.
As with many students on CC, you should be careful to not set all your hopes and dreams on one school. You may well get in, don’t get me wrong, but it is healthier for you to think of a range of schools that may interest you. Congratulations on doing so well to start off high school.
