What else to do in Houston, besides visting Rice?

I’m pretty sure Moody Gardens is open again. Anyone have any idea how the Strand area is doing? That was such a fun place to visit. If it interests you, there is the Texas Seaport Museum with the tall ship Elissa.

Other Houston museums - Museum of Printing History, Contemporary Arts Museum, Holocaust Museum, the DeMenil Collection, Buffalo Soldier National Museum, Center for Contemporary Craft, Rothko Chapel, and the Art Car Museum, just to name a few. Oh yes, and the Funeral Museum.

There’s actually quite a bit to enjoy in Houston - the ethnic diversity is quite vibrant! - but the sprawl/lack of zoning make for an overall unpleasant image.

restaurants i like are- baba yega, pappadeaux, lupe tortilla, pappasitos, star pizza, ruggles, pinks pizza, baby barnaby’s cafe, house of pies, good company barbeque, taste of texas, fogo de chao

and many more! go to yelp houston for tons of great info

My oldest son lives in St. Augustine, Florida and is a big surfer. Last time he came to Houston, he brought his surf board, saying he was going to Galveston to surf. I thought he was nuts! Anyway, he ended up going one day, and I have some amazing shots (he has this camera thing that attaches to his board) of him surfing the brown waves in Galveston. He said they were pretty decent - shoulder high. I had no idea!

Oh yeah…it’s a fav!!!

ag54 - I never thought of the Galveston waves as being all that good either! But DS had fun…well, except for the sunburn on his shoulders!

Houston catches more than its share of abuse, especially from Texans, but the truth is that it is an OK place to visit and a fine place to go to college, have a career and raise a family. Just like lots of other places. There is a Tier 1 of fun cities, which includes NYC, LA, Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, Miami, Wash. DC – and Houston is not in it. But neither is Memphis, Cinncinnati, Dallas and many others that are plenty good enough.

ya, i see lots of surfers, skimboarders, and a surprising amount kiteboarders and kitesurfers in galveston. Last time i was there about a week ago I saw 3 kitesurfers within like 200 yards of eachother
