What essay did you choose/write for Andover?

You never know! Just get to talking with the administration... They need all the hands they can get, and if you're available, and you're volunteering, they may let you. Even if it's just washing bedpans.

Bleh, I guess its just the regular hospital for me.

I told everyone during English that I wanted to become a psychiatrist and they laughed at me. :s Apparently I'd "talk too much and scare the crap out of my patients."

eww bedpans...gross haha i talk a lot too but i think you have to a good listener and talker, so it could be a win win

I don't think I could be a psychologist. Because though I like talking, and helping people work things out, I'm not the best at it. I like drugs. Successful drug therapies combined with behavioral therapy is the way.

Mmm, yeah, I've been obsessed with becoming a lawyer since 2nd grade, and the whole thing with psychology just started this year.

Blehhh, I have to rewrite the Article One of the Constitution in easy, modern language. =[

Hahahahaha, good luck with that. I wanted to be a teacher like my mom, both grandmothers, and like 6/10 aunts. Then a lawyer. Then an ER doctor. then a diagnostic doctor, or whatever House does. And now a psychiatrist.

xoogabyxoo: I was so disappointed with the results of Prop 8. Just. UGH. How could they do that? Other states like Massachusetts have already legalized gay marriages, and it's been legal in Netherlands since 2001. The United States is supposed to be one of the most forward-thinking countries in the world. How can they take away the most basic rights stated in the Declaration of Independence: "Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."? Anyways, sorry about my rant.

While we're on the topic of what we're going to be when we're older, I'm going to major in Bio-Mechanical Engineering. Hopefully at MIT. :D

Wow so far the biography and the something-unsure are most popular to CC users... ;) Nobody seemed to choose the same topic as mine... I chose the one day and $1,000 one :D

They were the most open ended essays, and therefore more people felt comfortable expanding under them

i wrote about the research task: i said that I would create/design a museum that would promote environmental awareness, as people are really ignorant about our environment these days. The structure itself would also be sustainable and green. Pretty good eh?

cool! you mean a museum on campus?

hm, talking about what you want to be when you grow up, i wanna become a biomechanical engineer too, i believe its the most modern field of fighting against different types of cancers or even fighting against any kind of virus or disease; with the use of plasmids anything can be accomplished nowadays!

i also want to become an astrophysicist, string theory and quantum mechanics is my thing :)

^^
Remind me to cheat off your test in science please =)

i did the biography one. i entitled it "falling up the stairs" in which i want to travel the world and speak multiple languages and write. i also said i wanted to be a philanthropist.

I didn't apply to Andover or anything, but I'd just like to say that these sound like very exciting and engaging essays! I'd much rather have done any of those than "write about a topic you are passionate about," or "what is your favorite song and why?"

(Essays I did for Exeter)

BNKSurfer3: A philanthropist, huh? That's really intersting. What sorts of philanthropy do you aspire to do? What I mean is urban (working with bad kids in bad situations, etc etc), third world (AIDS, Darfur, starving children in Cambodia, etc), or something else?

third worlds probably, since i grew up in a really nice area so i have always wanted to help others in different places. i would also love to travel around and help everyone and learn about many cultures. maybe like UN or something. but i also want to help out people in america since i live here.

That's a bit of a cop out lol

Jking jking... don't tear off my arms pls

If more privledged people gave a crap about everyone else, the world would be a far better place.

ROFL, just reminded me of something: Go to a bookstore/library/whatever and find the book "Things White People Like" and look for something that is along the lines of "Knowing What's Best for Poor People" -- oh man, that cracks me up.

In fact, Stuff White People Like is a complete list of all of the thing in the book, plus additional ones.

ANYWAY.

I personally thinkg that there are so many people in need of guidance here in America! It's great to help the Third World, of course, but with all of the troubled communities at home that could use some help, there would be more people giving aid here. I live in one of the top 10 biggest cities in Ohio, and although there has been some philantrophic effort, there's su much room for more. Troubled kids, troubled neighborhoods, troubled schools...the list goes on and on.

Yea I totally understand, but I was just poking fun at how most "community service" is not done, initially at least, because "privileged people give a crap about everyone else", I think more often that not it's done so you can write an essay about it. If we're really honest with ourselves, I think we do community service for the same reason we do many of our ECs.. because it's something college admissions wants to see.

I understand many people genuinely care and devote their lives to service, I just think a hefty majority go into it for admissions, although many might go out truly caring about it.

Starcrossed: i completley agree. thats kind of what i wanted to say, but saying "i am going to help out america!" just sounds like ehhh.
