Under what category do Portuguese fall under? I have have been going to all different kinds of places trying to get definitions for Hispanic/Latino and Caucasian, yet I seem never to get a straight answer. What ethnic group should I put down on my apps?

You are considered caucasian.

put other and write iberian

I dont think there is a correct answer for this question. So I would put what you consider yourself.

Hispanic/Latino usually refers to Central/South Americans.

Hispanic = native spanish speaker (even people from Spain)

Latino = Central/South American

Iberian = Spain + Portugal (it could be a mix of north African and White if you look back to the Moors).

You are a riddle wrapped in an enigma.

the only europeans that can check "other latino" is people from Spain, in fact, they are the ones who the word hispanic is derived from.
white people who are portugese should put caucasian
white people who are from spain should put caucasian + latino other

anyone disagree?

Yeah, I would disagree. For the purposes of college admissions Portuguese == Spanish == URM. Go for "Hispanic."

What fraction of Spanish/Portugese should one be to put this down on the application? (in addition to checking caucasian as well)

I'm pretty sure a Spanish/Portuguese person could put down "Hispanic" without being being wrong.

...wow just put hispanic. It'll be of great help to you in admissions compared to "caucasian." Just as long as your interviewers cant tell the different, it's fine.

Hisportorganic?

I don't think you are hispanic. Doesn't hispanic refer to (descendants of) people who migrated to the US from Spanish speaking countries???

percentages anyone?

Black (Not of Hispanic origin)-All persons having origins in any of the Black racial groups of Africa.

Hispanic - All persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin, regardless of race.

Asian or Pacific Islander - All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, India, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, and Samoa.

American Indian or Alaskan Native - All persons having origins in any of the original peoples of North America, and who maintain cultural identification through tribal affiliation or community recognition.

You are Portuguese, which is NOT considered Hispanic. I would write it under other.

i love for how that identification they can just clump together all people from europe, the middle east, and north africa and call us "caucasian/white" and then clearly define hispani as being from a certain area. People from the middle east and north africa are mostly not white and there are MANY MANY "underrepresented" european races (and middle eastern and north africa). I wouldnt buy for a second that a hispanic person is more underrepresented than say, an armenian, but the hispanic person gets an edge in college while the armenian must check "white/caucasian" (had to edit because i just realized armenians are from the Caucuses area where i believe the word caucasian derives from haha. nevertheless they wouldnt be considered caucasian)...anyway sorry for my rant

I would check Other: Iberian or Portuguese because i would say hispanic relates to the spanish speaking world and not portugal/brazil

I believe you would be classified as a Lusitanic.

Anglo-named Bill Richardson (New Mexico governor) claims he's Hispanic. Scandanavian-looking Cameron Diaz is Hispanic. Black baseball player David Ortiz is Hispanic. If those 3 can pass for Hispanic, who CAN'T? I say everybody apply as Hispanic and let's stop all this nonsense.

David Ortiz is from the Dominican Republic. He is probably a descendant from the slaves brought to the Caribbean for sugar plantations.
