What ethnicity do I put down if I'm Indian?

What ethnicity do I put down if I'm Indian? Do I have to put Asian? I'm going to major in electrical engineering, so I'm thinking that I wouldn't have very good chances if they saw that I was Asian (compared to other ethnicities).

Decline to state. You're allowed.

I thought ethnicity was just for 'statistical purposes', and not an admissions factor. What about 'first language spoken'?

Indian is treated the same way by AA. ORMs.

VertigoFrog - What are AA and ORMs?

AA= Affirmative Action
ORM= Overrepresented Minority.

An ORM would be a South Asian(Indian), Arab/Middle Easterner, or a pacific-rim Asian (Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese).

Bah, so would it be best to decline to state? Why don't all Asians that are aware of the bias against ORMs decline to state?

If you think that it would affect your admissions -- don't indicate a race. that is always an option. Realize that your name and/or parents name can sometimes indicate a race if someone really wants to base a decision on race.

If I were you -- I would not mark any race. Indians are considered asian --and they are overrepresented (especially in engineering).

well it depends on yer name....
if you decline to state yer race and yer name is like

Vivekander Subramaniam or somethin, i doubt colleges will think thats mexican or black.

even more so if it ends in patel.
