i am very excited to be a hoosier this fall, but every time i tell someone i am going to indiana university, they tell me to get ready to party! dont get me wrong, i love to party every once in a while. but will most of the population be out of control party animals? even the kelley direct admit students? how do the not so partying type students fare at this school? i have submitted deposits at another school just incase i change my mind (which i probably wont lol)

Take a look at page 2 of this forum, and the thread titled “What Makes IU Bloomington a Good College.” From all that I have gleaned from CC, there are all types of students at IUB, and you can find a good balance between work and play. There are 4 strong students from our high school (Calif.) at IUB right now, 3 juniors and 1 Kelley DA sophomore, and all 4 are having really good experiences. Best of luck to you!

I am more worried about the video games. My twin boys love to play basketball and tennis. I know IU’s tennis courts are pretty decent. The indoor ones for winter are expensive. Are there indoor basketball courts that students can rent?

^ Yes we have two facilities (SRSC and HPER) which both offer indoor basketball, tennis, raquetball, floor hockey, soccer, and swimming among many other fitness options. Usually its pick-up style but there’s never a problem with someone not being able to find a game to join.

OP, IU is a party school for a reason. The party scene might (and probably will) feel overwhelming during welcome week and the first couple weekends of the fall semester as people will be going out every night and the streets get flooded with drunken people and cops and it will ** never ** be quiet.

By October, things calm down a lot and it becomes a lot more balanced and the party scene becomes more of an option among other options rather than a monopoly. But you still won’t have a hard time finding a party any night Wednesday-Saturday. Plus by this time, pledgeships will have begun and less freshmen are drinking and classes get harder so there are other focuses.

Hoosierman, Although IU was not my son’s number #1 school pick he is looking forward to going to IU for many reasons. He is a serious student and yet likes to socialize and party. He has several very bright friends who are current students who claim it is academically challenging. Overall, sounds like a school with very sound academic programs, great professors and a school with spirit. There is alot of partying at all the Big 10 schools so the key is learning to find the right balance. I have yet to hear of anyone who has been dissatified with IU academics.

Dorm selection can make a big difference. Some dorms are quieter. Note I didn’t say quiet, just quieter. Some posters would make you believe you are a loser for choosing one of those dorms. All students socialize.

One student implied that times are different now than when I was at IU. Not so. Not much has changed when it comes to the party scene. I knew students who were miserable then and I’m sure there are some that are miserable now.

Do some searches on the IU forum and get some information. Make an informed decision.

During the first few weeks of school, around holidays, and the weeks before and after Little 5, you’ll feel surrounded by partiers. Otherwise, there will be that constant hum of parties, but it won’t interfere with your life.
I lived on the first floor my freshman year and I can tell you that there will be people getting too drunk to manage stairs Wednesday through Saturday. I know a Kelley DA who partied regularly every week/weekend and managed to stay at IU. It comes down to how responsible you will expect yourself to be. Go to class and do the work–you’ll have more than enough time to relax after the important stuff is taken care of.
