I was reading a post by someone who stated that if your parents didnt' have the equivalent of an American degree or higher, or if they had a foreign degree, you count as a first generation college student. I've never heard this before, so I was wondering if it was true?

There’s no clear answer on the question of who is first-generation. For some colleges, first generation means neither parent ever attended college. For others, it means neither parent earned a degree from a 4-year college. But I don't think that any college would define a student whose parent who earned the equivalent of a Bachelors degree in another country as a first-generation student. It's counterintuitive. It would give the first-generation tip to an applicant whose parents graduated from Oxford!

If in doubt, check with Yale Admissions.

Yeah, that's what I thought too (about parents graduating from Oxford).
