What, exactly, is a nerd?

the above is only true if you are not a nerd

i am a nerd, and i beat people up. and am beaten up.
to me, a nerd is anyone with an in-depth knowledge and passion for a specific academic subject, like me and english. a geek is someone who is socially inept OR into ANIME (not animay, d'you want me to shoot you?) and the likes.
a dork is someone who may or may not be a nerd or a geek but regardless has no fashion sense.

A nerd takes his calculus book into a bar, not as a conversation starter, but to study...I guess this doesn't work with the 21 drinking age...

I bring my calculus book to pass the time when I'm camping in line for a movie. I mean, I've got nothing else to read, so why not?

Hey I want to be a animation major (right now studio art major) and love japanese animations (animay hahah! Fun spelling everyday)and korean/japanese comics... I am not any of the above. (and i know more people who are into it but not necessarily dorks!)

But then again that might be because I'm asian.

I do know the people you are talking about (Talking in random japanese that doesn't make any sense "OMG You are so KAWAII Hikaru CHAN!! OMGGG") and that's why i like to stay away from anime clubs.. =_=

A nerd doesn't have to be socially inept at all. Maybe this is a local/regional difference. Some of the most popular people at my school can be considered nerds, based on the fact that they take school seriously and are smart. I am even a nerd in my own right, even though I am not socially inept at all. I have a large group of friends, like to party, and am going to be palying baseball in college. Where I'm from, the term nerd doesn't have a negative connotation at all.

I would like to second fjm_001 in that anyone on this website is a nerd. And that is a good thing because you care about school enough to be informed.

When you are a sixteen year old girl and read history magazines instead of Seventeen, you already know that you want to major in art history, and when people react to this by asking "you can major in that?" that's when you know you are a nerd.

nerd - someone who is into a certain subject and is usually bright. usually knows a little bit about everything. they usually win at trivial pursuit and yell at the idiots on jeopardy.

geek - a computer person with a lack of social skills and is usually dumb.

dork - besides a whale *****, i would say a dork is a klutz or someone that is constantly in la-la land. girls often say it when they do something stupid or embarrassing.

Nerd=Engineering major.

A GEEK is someone who has better social skills than a nerd but is an outcast. They often will love school but usually have one area of specialty (math, art, poetry, etc). Geeks usually don't conform and wear clothes from Hot Topic, don't like sports, and watch animay cartoons.

wow that explains me to a T, except for the anime part

funny to read these differences -- my son is routinely called a geek bc he reads his science books and Scientific American for fun, thinks everything about science is exciting and cool, and loves to explain why to anyone who will listen (and even some of us who don't). He's a straight A kid with a full tuition merit scholarship next yr. But he is also a three sport captain (playing one in college), sr class pres, all region chorus, with tons of friends. Geek definitely does not have an "outcast" or "not smart" connotation in our world -- it just means passionate about a particular academic subject, as in "science geek"!

Oh yeah, and he's madras plaid preppy too!
