What exactly is ACT?..

I know this is a pretty dumb question, but honestly I only hear about SAT SAT SAT SAT and SAT again. I've never actually known about ACT.

What is it for?
How much harder is it (than SAT)?
What is it about?
Do I take it in my sophmore year, or later?

It serves the same purpose as the SAT – a college entrance exam. In terms of difficulty, it’s the same as the SAT (on paper). Now, some people prefer the ACT more than the SAT, and some people prefer the SAT more than the ACT. It just depends on what type of test they’re good at.

The SAT is more of a reasoning/logic test. It requires high school courses, yes, but it emphasizes more on analyzing and has “traps” in the questions, but timing is not too terribly strict on it.

The ACT is more of a comprehensive high school exam. It tests what you’ve learned in high school. It focuses less on analyzing and tests your ability to remember what you supposed to have learned in high school. Timing is much stricter on this, which makes up for its straightforwardness (thus, the SAT and the ACT are, on paper, the same in difficulty).

You take this test whenever you wish (preferably after you’ve had 9th grade at least and even more preferably if you’ve had precal/trig so that your math score isn’t low). But you can really take it whenever throughout high school. I took it my first time right after my sophomore year ended (June 2007), and that’s a good time to start (I had just gotten out of precal/trig that year, so my math was good, and everything else on the ACT [english/grammar, reading, science] require reading skills, which everyone should have anyway).

what does the science section basically cover? any specific sciences? You say you took it after your sophomore year, meaning that you probably haven’t finished learning about all sciences yet. How did you manage to answer the questions that cover the unknown parts? O__o

anything from biology to chem to physics and whatnot… but all the information is right in front of you in the passages… now, knowing some science does help, but if you don’t know a lot of science, this section does provide you with all you need to know… this section is notorious for being pretty strict on the curve on most occasions, so be careful

i am a science person to begin with, so the science section wasn’t too bad for me… but as i said, even if you aren’t a science person, all the info is there right in front of you

ohhh i see.
thanks for the replies!
