What exactly is "depth" in ECs?

See, I have 5 things I'm in. But 5 is too much imo.

But then again, I'm not in a thousand clubs and do nothing. I have some depth. Random awards here and there in all.

I have 2 I'm sure qualify as "depth", but to what point do I "not include" the rest (3) as my ECs? Because they aren't "deep enough" despite the random awards and positions?

In addition to the 2 I have:

Quiz Team - Regional 2nd place Division A (in a competition important in our region), secretary in junior year, various KMO with good standings.

Community Service - I have lots of hours, i can get good recommendations here (to not appear as some automaton), have written a blog extensively about this, and president in junior - senior year (1 year)

Music - in regional Band (in an organization important in our region), Tri-M honor society (some hours), went to the southeast honor band festival, and AMIS in my junior year.

I'm not in the states, and don't have access to a lot of things... so "in an organization important in our region" college admins will know about that?

Is this "depth" or "breadth"? What would you do to appear "stronger" in ECs?

blah i really think this is breadth… :frowning: shucks.

AND to the point where you are perceived as a student with no focused interests… is it better in this case to just cut off the weakest few? (What are these weakest few?)

Depth would be portrayed by consistent membership, leadership positions, awards, etc. I think anywhere between 3 and 6 clubs is good enough (that is, active weekly participation is limited to no more than 6 organizations, any more and you’re in danger of spreading yourself too thin).

Example of depth is… Track team/cross country team/volunteer to hand out water in summer races for cancer or whatever/ address envelopes for the state games/ etc. Every year

It’s a few different things but it’s obvious you like being involved with running

Depth is succeeding at a high level in one particular activity, attaining awards and moving up in the leadership ranks. Example

Science Olympiad
9th: Member, 5th place county
10th: Treasurer, 3rd place county and 10th place state
11th: VP, 2nd place county and 6th place state
12th: Presdient, 1st place county and 3rd place state

What aluminum boat is demonstrating is passion for something conveyed by involvement in several related activies. I wouldn’t call that depth in one particular EC, but it’s a plus on the application.

so would the above (5 organizations and things i did in 3) be considered depth?

the blog thing could be very cool to write about for your essay!!!
