What Exactly is the Score Impact of the ESSAY?

Help, I am totally confused about the role of the essay in scoring:

Is there a flat score you receive for your mutliple choice section, and the essay is then added on, or can a low essay diminish the first score?. Frankly I just need a straight line explanation. I have read that the essay is 250 points is this true? Say you get 90% of the writing questions right; what would a 10 or 12 essay yield versus a 6?

Not completely sure how it works, but:

D made a 9 on her essay

and

she made an 80 (perfect score) on the multiple choice section.

SAT Writing score was an 800.

Anyway the essay counted less than I thought it would in the overall scheme of things.

^ Aw, she was lucky.

I got a 740 with an 8 on the essay and 1 question wrong (no omits) on the MC section.

The essay stands for 3/10 of your writing score. If you want I can take a photograph of an actual conversiontable with rawscore/essayscore to which writing score you will get. Pm me if you want this :D

According to CB, the essay counts for about 30% of the overall writing grade.

Here’s a thread about the impact of the essay score that you may find interesting:

BTW, ignatius’ score is pretty standard - a 9 or greater on the essay will generally get you an 800 if you get all the MC correct.

Does anyone know what is the most you can get wrong with a 11-12 essay to make 700?

12 essay 40rawscore = 710
11 essay 41rawscore = 700

no no its not a big deal… i got a 7 (didnt finish) and still got 770 W

Thanks xpon, that answers my question perfectly …

BBBabe13…

That I don’t get …how did you get a 7 which is pretty low and still get a 770. That must mean you got none wrong on multiple choice?

In my opinion, it’s pretty important. Colleges might request to look at them for discrepancy between your application writing and writing done under pressure (albeit it’s just a rough draft).
