what exactly is vandy good in?

i realize vanderbilt is a top quality university but i don't know what programs are actually strong in it. i saw some like nrc rankings and vandy wasn't really up there. i realize the rankings are outdated (i think..) can someone tell me what vandy's strengths are? ex: u chicago-econ nyu-finance/film etc.

Vandy is strong across the board. My Econ/English classes have been outstanding.

Vanderbilt's strength lies in the George Peabody School. Our programs in developmental psychology and pedagogy are unmatched.

Grammar. <cough></cough>

Vandy's med school is definitely top tier

top special ed program in the country, i believe.

for econ would you go to UW-Madison or Vanderbilt.

look at where the professors of econ got thier degrees- at each school that will give you an idea of how amazing vandy is.

Education is Vanderbilt's only top 10 rated department, which is part of Peabody. Their biomedical engineering program is top 25 in the country, I believe.

Vanderbilt's religion department is also top tier.

are you serious? Vanderbilt's religion?

Let's keep this discussion to undergraduate programs since most people here are undergraduates.

I'm quite serious, and I was referring to the undergraduate program. Besides Emory, Brandeis, and a few others, Vanderbilt has one of the best Jewish/Biblical Studies majors out there. It's a good complement for classics/anthropology/history majors.

How's their political science department?

I recently read in one of those college guide books that it is currently understaffed and that it has been having some problems lately. I think this book was from 2004. I don't know if anything has changed since, or if that was ever really true, but the book was rather unflattering.
I hope it is wrong because poly sci is what i had though about majoring in.

If anyone is a current poly sci major, could you please give us some input?

PoliSci had problems a few years back with teaching styles. But they've hired some top teachers and its pretty much a non-issue anymore.

Thanks college2332,
would you happen to know anything about the public policy major?

sry, i'm not sure.

Anyone know anything about Blair School of Music? Good for performance?

Blair is excellent for performance, and the relatively new MA-5 Music Ed program is coming along quite well also. I think Blair has a good mixture of hard-core performance attitude and the understanding that students have to do things outside of music too. There are lots of double-majors, such as myself, and pre-med kids too. When I was looking at coming to Blair, I kept looking for it in articles, rankings, etc., but never could find out what kind of reputation Blair has. But, since I have gotten here, I have been impressed with the faculty, guest performers who have come, etc. Many of the faculty are involved in the Nashville Symphony and other "Music City" events. My oboe teacher is first chair in the Nashville Symphony, and frequently plays in recordings for big-time stars. A few weeks ago, he played for a Faith Hill record, and if you hear an oboe on a country or pop cd, there is a good chance it is my teacher. That is just one example. And there are some great opportunities like that for the students too. Also, Blair is good because if you get here and realize that music isn't for you (as many do), you can easily change majors and still get a great degree from a great school, whereas if you go to Eastman, Juilliard, etc., you are pretty much stuck with music.

How does Vandy rank in regard to other top premed schools such as WashU/Emory... are there good teachers/labs/% admitted after graduation to Med school?
