What excuse is a good one?

In tenth grade my friend influenced me and i ended up getting a D in chemistry…BUT my parents signed a paper allowing me to continue chem so i passed second semester but only with a C. Yeah i know i was dumb in 10th grade compared to all you on here.

If i tell colleges of the peer pressure and whatnot is that a valid excuse? (my gpa this semester is going to be around 4.25 so i improved)

I don't think they'd be impressed. Lots of people are subjected to peer pressure and don't crumble. You should probably focus more on why and how much you've improved than trying to explain away the grade.

Just to tell you how bad they are, the kid tried to break into my house less than a year later and he did break into my other friends house over winter break. He had to do a whole lot of community service and pay a fine. Im not friends with him anymore :)

I'm speechless (and congratulate you for getting away)...

Dont make excuses. Excuses would just show your weakness more, not less. Just get better grades and the C will be an anomoly. One C won't wreck your chances for college. Colleges want to see that you grew and did better. The reason for the C is irrelevent (maybe a major illness or family crisis- would be the only excuses that might be looked at). You could discuss in your essay the growth experience you had, but it would have to be done carefully without looking like an excuse

well first semester is still a D. Im not nerdy I dont think a C will "kill" me but the D definitely will. Am i right in assuming that i have NO chance at the top tier? I plan to retake chemistry over the summer anyways, but idk if they will still see the D.

They will see the D, but will also see the "repairing" you did. It won;t kill you. Take the AP or SATII in chem. It will show the admins alot about your character and drive.

u know what....i have the exact same problem in chemistry, except that the D was a quarter grade, and C will most likely end up my semester grade :(
I could've gotten an A...the stuff was so do-able, but i realized that too late. my friend influenced me too and i more or less slacked off.

You may want to keep in mind that most adults read "my friend influenced me" as "I allowed my friend to overcome my own judgment".

"I'm speechless (and congratulate you for getting away)..."

I was in mammoth snowboarding at the time. If i was there my dad wouldve shot the little $***.

"u know what....i have the exact same problem in chemistry, except that the D was a quarter grade, and C will most likely end up my semester grade "

I guess C's are bad. I have had a few C's in my day, trust me they arent going to hurt you as much as a D.

"They will see the D, but will also see the "repairing" you did. It won;t kill you. Take the AP or SATII in chem. It will show the admins alot about your character and drive."

Thanks! Ill take the SAT II yes!!!

sat ii chem is really easy if u've taken ap chem

i got a 750 without studying

Admissions committees don't like excuses. What they DO like are people who take responsibility for their own mistakes, learn from them, and move on. So, figure out what you have learned from your experience with that friendship and how it has helped you mature and turn it into a positive in admissions, either in interviews or in one of your essays.
