What experiences do you want to hear at CalSO?

As a CalSO counselor, I want to address as much of the concerns you have as possible.

Let me know what sort of concerns or things you would like to hear from a current student's first year experience.

Will you be at SoCal CalSO??? If so, I'd like to know more about URAP and Study-Abroad programs. Thanx

I've got some questions:

Do we dorm with other new CalSO students or already enrolled Berkeley students?

Is this the actual agenda or just an "example agenda" of what COULD happen:

What kind of stuff will be provided for us in our dorm? We have to wake up REALLY early (By 7:15 it seems), so should we bring our own alarm clock or will there be one there?

For the Cal 1 Card, can you use an old, expired passport (It's REALLY old though...like 10 years old) or birth certificate and your high school ID card as proper identification?

How much down time will there be? Will we have a sufficient amount of activities and school business that needs to be taken care of to be entertained? I'm just concerned about how boring it might be having to wait for everybody else to finish their business (waiting for others to finish their talk with counselors, registering for classes, etc.).

What kind of activities are planned? Is there some place where I can find a more detailed explanation of the various events in the agenda?

Where do we check-in?

The reality of how competitive classes are? Trying to cope up with schoolwork?

If my friend and I want to room together, do we just show up at registration the same time?

^^^ yes.. they just write your name down. I did that. Just tell them you want to room with your friend.

When do we get our advisor code?

And for us late sleepers, which event(s) is completely necessary, and which are not?

U sign up for classes the 2nd day (thats how u keep people from leaving).. they dont care what you do the night u stay. u can drink if u want (dont get caught), u can go to SF, u can chill in berkeley, u can watch tv in the lounge, play pool, anything u want.

I won't be in SoCal, but many CalSO counselors will be.

The CalSO program will be pretty intense. You will be receiving a LOT of information.

I'm looking in particular for what kind of information you would want to know from a current student a Cal.

Good study places
Getting the maximum out of your Cal1 Card
Where to get books
How to deal with roommates
Time Management

probably more later :)

How do you find out all the clubs you can join and if you over-extended yourself in terms of joining too many clubs.

Also, do you find that in your first semester, you try to make as many friends as you can, then later spend a great deal of time trying to avoid people with whom you don't have a lot of interest? Is it at all easy to make friends in classes?

Also, how hard is it to find study groups and if you joined a study group, was it academically beneficial, or end up more of a social thing? I know in HS, our study groups disintegrated really quickly from studying to anything other than studying.

Oh, yeah, and when you go to the dining halls, what's the pc thing to do in terms of sitting at tables? Does everyone just find a table by themselves until it fills up, or can you go and sit at a table with people already there?

unlimitedx - Could you answer my questions, particularly #4?

Thanks.

Yeah, and my questions too please.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that I'm going to the CalSO for transfers.

Hey Azure, I can't answer no. 4 but I'm going to guess, yes, you can use an old expired passport. The U.S. govt was allowing that last year coming back from Mexico and Canada, and I think they are a little more security conscious than Berkeley. Well. . . . maybe not!

Also, if you live in CA, you can go to the DMV and get a CA I.D. card and that would be good I.D. And I know you can use an expired PP to get one of those.

Hey everyone. Tomorrow's the first program and I'm frantically preparing myself for it.

For question #4, the id can be an old passport, BUT it's also ok to bring your high school id card with photo, so be on the safe side.

7:15 is for breakfast and you can miss that. Usually the counselors will tell you to meet up at 8:45am as a group on day 2.

The Telebears Phase I tutorial REALLY confused me. What exactly do I need to complete before CalSO? I finished the tutorial. Anything else?

unlimitedx, What's your name?

I would like to know that as well.
