varsity sport, school paper, drama club, music seem to do well, I would shy away from basket weaving, hacky sack and video gaming, though.

There are quite a few varsity athletes and musicians vying for spots at top schools, so while those can be valuable experiences in and of themselves, they are not the way to distinguish yourself.

In general, as the list from NSM indicates, the most well-regarded ECs are those that extend beyond the school community. State or national positions or awards are the way to go.

Of course, there are also ways to be impressive within your own school. If you love writing but your school has a shoddy (or nonexistant) lit mag, push your sleeves up and do the dirty work required to put the lit mag back on the map.

At the end of the day, the name of the game is never quantity. Adcoms are not impressed by your diligence or ability to adhere to a tightly packed Filofax but by your ability and accomplishment. This means you can quit your twelve thousand clubs and focus on the activities, clubs, sports, or otherwise, that you actually enjoy.
