I’m a rising junior and I need to see what else I could do to improve…
Schools I’s aiming for: University of Florida, College of William and Mary, NYU, UCLA, Georgetown, and WASHU.
Academics:
GPA: 3.92 UW 4.91 W
AP Test Scores: Human Geography (5), Biology (4), Chemistry (3), Calculus AB (3), Lang (5), and World (4)
SAT (Practice): 1400
ACT (Practice) 30
Junior year course load: AP Environmental, AP US History, AP Literature, AP Calculus BC, AP European History, Dual Enrollment Finance, Dual Enrollment Psychology
Extra Curriculars:
Debate Club
-Member in 9th, Treasurer in 10th, President in 11th
-Participate in regional and state competitions but haven’t passed state level.
Interned at my District Representative’s Congressional office near the VA. I plan on helping out with various veteran events throughout junior year.
Will volunteer at the local library
Will join mock trial, maybe model UN, and maybe NHS.
I am considering applying to be a florida senate page or HOR page.
I want to do more extra curricular activities pertaining to law/government/politics but I’m not sure of what else I can apply to.
Since you seem to be on top of the leadership component of extracurriculars, do you have an idea of what you want to major in? Doing activities/internships that are related to the major of your choice can increase your chances of getting in. If you’re undecided, don’t worry.
Additionally, try to have something under your belt that sets you apart from the rest of the applicants. (Eg: Getting out of the state level in debate club).
Lastly, if you have something that can add a ‘wow’ factor for Admissions Officers, definitely add it. For me, it’s making music with popular artists.
I hope this helps you out some. Don’t stress and definitely don’t put too much on your plate. As much as they like to see involvement, they like to see student health as well
My OOS daughter got into W&M with fewer ECs than you have. Similar stats (SAT 1440, ACT 32); 5 AP classes. She was on (and captained) her debate team; girl scouts (no gold award); Key Club; National Honor Society.
That being said, I think for Georgetown you are right for wanting to add some. Be careful, as a rising junior to just join Mock Trial and Model UN at this point for your resume. That’s how it’s going to look. If you’re really interested in politics, get in with a midterm election and go for depth rather than breadth of experience.
Georgetown loves languages. And even self taught with some ec to go along with it. Ie. Self taught French and volunteered to work as an aid worker in Haiti for three weeks over the summer.
@privatebanker The only other language I’m fluent in is Cantonese. It was my first language. But I don’t know if this is helpful… I only use it to speak to my family. Cantonese also isn’t as widely known as Mandarin so it’s not as useful for foreign affairs or IR.
