What extracurricular activities?

I have a pretty decent resume with a lot of work experience and achievments from highschool, but I don't have anything from college. I am a Finance major and our school has an "FMA" chapter (Financial management association) that I was thinking of joining. I need some other activities to "pad" my resume, but I do not have a lot of time since I work and go to school.

What kind of clubs, organizations, etc did you join?

Activities only pad your resume if you take an active leadership role or significant work (such as a political group or newspaper). Just being a member is not resume-worthy.

I’m an appointed member of the student union dining committee (in charge of being the student liason to the staff of the most popular cafeteria), cofounder and secretary on the eboard of the marching/pep band, and the campus contact and coordinator for the Bill Richardson campaign. I also have worked in the past 2 years significantly (probably logging as much as 500 hours for Deval and Bill and around 100 for the rest each) either canvassing, phonebanking, or working in campaign headquarters for Deval Patrick, Joe Courtney, Bill Richardson, Jamie Eldridge, and Nikki Tsongas.

I’m also active in DFA, Student Peace Alliance, Positive Foundations (millennium development goals), and the Pottery Club though I probably wouldn’t mention them on my resume.

i just work and do internships. i want to volunteer too. internships is probably the best for a student. it’s hard to get them once you’re out of school.

Yea I think I’ll go with the work and internships instead of whatever the other guy said. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of any of those people.

Get extra curricular activities that will surely enhance your talent. It will be some way to success.

There’s simply no time to have a lot of activities like you did in high school. Just do what you love (be it music, volunteering, sports, whatever) - that way you don’t stress out and you will be more willing to put the hours/effort in to get into a leadership position.

University is way more about balance. I was one of those people in hs who was in a bit of everything. Now I need to limit it - after school, studying, and exercise (running and yoga for me), I still want a life! My ec’s so far this year are choir and MUN (being a director at our uni’s conference). I might add something else next term because I have one less class (right now I have six… so it’s a lot!). If you really want to get good experience, do it during the summer. That’s what I did - I was a research student at a law office the summer after freshman year. This year I’m planning on working in another country… mostly so I can travel, but the experience will be great too. :)

It’s hard to get an internship during the school year- companies want more time than you can often give during the year. And make sure to start looking early!

I was an intern at a nonprofit over this past summer, work for the Women’s Study department during the year, and next summer will do research abroad before doing a full year abroad. Studying/researching abroad is much more valuable IMO than an at-home internship or job.
