what extracurriculars could i join outside of school?

That you know of?

You could tutor at your elementary or junior high school.

I especially like community service: you can meet interesting people, you make connections that can come in handy when its time for college apps, and it's always nice to know you've contributed a little something to the community you live in.

Where do you find community service?

Schools, Community centers, hospitals (at some of em).

Like Iggi mentioned, you can tutor. Also, if there are certain sports that your school does not offer, you can participate in those as well.

Community service is nice, but it most likely is not going to look as good as a challenging internship. Remember that colleges like the fact that you are a nice person, but I think that cservice is very much overrated.

You could join a mentoring program...

Volunteer at a hospital. Tutor "special needs" children. Collect used musical instruemtns for a neighboring (less-advantaged) community. Organize a concert and donate the proceeds to a special charity. (MAJOR commitment, but someone in my town did it when his father died of brain cancer. He got a Big Name to donate the time, got a local venue to donate the space, sold the tickets, and danated the proceeds. It was very impressive.)

Also, there's usually some comm service associated with the various clubs you might already be a member of -- ie, totor younger kids in math; help the libary before their book sale; help re-build the playground in your town.

Those are some pretty crazy ECs.

Read your local newspaper and see what's happenning around town.

And there's always busking.

if you support any causes or organizations, like green peace/environmental preservation, amnesty international (regional chapters exist outside of schools), literary foundations, religious dialogue, film societies, etc., then there's always chapters or groups to find in your community that you can get involved in. also, if you're into politics, you can always campaign.

volunteermatch.org

Your city hall might have a program. The library and hospital are usually places that need volunteers.

My Ds do lots of volunteer work and through their work they have met the best people

And one has had some great internships she would not have been qualified for if she hadn't volunteered

Also do something you love and not just something for a resume, as suggested
