So I really enjoy cooking and was wondering what sort of food dishes would symbolize Stanford. What dish would you attribute to Stanford and why?

The Dish I attribute to Stanford is a prominent landmark.

hmmmmmmm. That's actually an interesting question. I love cooking as well! :D

I would think something along the lines of a summery salad -- lots of different greens, julienned carrots, sliced bell peppers, cherry tomatoes, green beans, chick peas, diced mango, mandarin oranges, crunchy tortilla pieces, with a light sweet and sour soy dressing. Just something with a lot of color and flavor.

Why? Well, Stanford has great sunny weather, which always reminds me of salad for some reason. The sweet and sour dressing also goes towards weather; I'd probably picked something like caesar for the cold northern ivies. The crunchy tortilla pieces are a tribute to South Californian location. The diced mango and mandarin oranges is the aspect of Stanford students that just love to have fun and hang out at the beach. Lots of color in general = diversity.

or maybe I'm reading too much into just a piece of salad! heh. Now you've made me hungry. :D

^ Stanford is not in Southern California.

woops. facepalm Meant middle-California. Time to review my geography.

also, i'm not sure how much hanging out at the beach there is on the campus...

^Yeah, I think some people tend to think that Stanford neighbors UCLA and has that "Southern California feel" and that students love going to the beach in their free time. When in fact, it's actually located in Northern California where it tends to rain a lot.

Stanford is like an hour away from the Pacific, right?

The crunchwrap supreme because it kind of reminds me of a giant taco bell

I actually wrote my "why stanford" essay with food as my extended metaphor. Stanford is like...farfalle pasta, mint-basil water and chipotle-tomato spread (don't ask).

To the poster above, I hope you made it funny or extremely good, extended food metaphors tend to go over horribly with admissions. Don't ask for a citation, I don't have one, I'm just saying from experience. Anyway, Stanford to me is like a big chicken sandwhich. The Tendercrisp Chicken Sandwich from Burger King, to be exact.

Beef Supreme, I beg to differ. I had a food metaphor in my Why Stanford? essay and admissions actually loved it - they wrote about it in my regional admissions letter, in the personalized note part.

That's not really relevant, but I thought I'd throw that in, haha.

That's why I said "tend" and qualified it with "I hope you made it funny or extremely good". I'm sure yours fell into one of the categories (or both).

Stanford is NOT in SoCal. It is not even in "middle California" (which doesn't exist). We are in Northern California (NorCal).

It's less than an hour away from the beach. I'd say Half Moon Bay is half an hour if traffic cooperates. In response to 2legit2quit, there's some hanging out at the beach, but not on a regular basis. Most freshman dorms will organize a big day trip there in the spring, and some people go there for fun (I've done so on a whim a couple of times). But it's not the kind of beach you can swim at--the ocean is cold up here.

Just thought I'd clear that up.
