Ive read the conventional wisdom on essay questions, but how do you handle the "why are you applying here" prompts ?

Do you think its better to use a story style answer, like you do for essays ? Or just more straightforward answer? I know colleges want to hear how great they are and how much you want to go there, but if you suck up too much will that turn them off ?

1) You should write in the style that makes you feel the most comfortable.

2) The line between sucking up and expressing enthusiasm is pretty tricky, but I think if you’re honest and your response has some depth and offers some insight, you’ll be fine.

Just make sure it’s not a “cookie-cutter” response. One of the tips I’ve learned is to replace the college’s name with another college while you’re reading over your response; if it could fit just as nicely without any further editing, it’s probably a bit too broad and doesn’t really imply that you put much thought into it.

So related question. Some of the schools are giving space for up to 500 words for this prompt. Would a 1 paragraph response be inappropriate ? How long or your answers to this question ? (im not sure how to spend a whole page on this answer)

I think u should be honest. It’s important that u do some research or ask the students about their schools. It would be great if u can include something special about this school, like their traditions or something u can’t apply to every school. Like u certainly cannot write Cornell is in the middle of a big city like u do in NYU. The admission officers don’t want to see how great their schools are, but rather, they want to see if their schools are good fits for u. U should focus on ur relationship with the school.
Hope this helps and good lucks :)
