I sent the FAFSA and I was just wanting to know which tax forms we have to mail in.

Michigan uses CSS Profile.

The Michigan fin aid site says that you need to submit the Profile if you are interested in need only aid. The FAFSA is required for need only and non-need based aid.

I know that you need to send in the FAFSA and Profile.

But, what forms as in W-2 and 1040 do we need to send in? Do we wait until they tell us?

I've never had a college ask me for any actual tax forms. They will sometimes ask you to fill out a form confirming information from the FAFSA and apparenly can ask to see your tax return, but even then no one I've ever known has had a college ask for this.

ALL colleges ask for tax forms for verification later on.

What makes you say that forgiven? I've been to 2 different colleges (one community college and one small college) and my sister has been to 3 different colleges and neither one of us was ever asked for a tax form even though we both received financial aid (federal, state, and loans). I was asked 1 year at 1 of those colleges to fill out a verification form that they compared to my FAFSA, but they didn't require an actual copy of the taxes. So, it makes me wonder was this abnormal? What would make you say they all ask for all your tax forms? What is even the point to receiving a FAFSA, verification sheets AND tax forms. They're essentially getting triplicates of every piece of information then. And more over it strikes me as odd that they would ask for any other than a copy of the return even if they did ask. Otherwise people without certain forms (such as myself, I've never had a W-2) would have difficulty complying.

I just checked the U of M website and this is a quote from their financial aid page:

OFA will send you an email if you must submit additional application items for verification purposes (such as tax returns, a Household Information Questionnaire, etc.).

Note it says IF, not when. So it is possible they will not need anything. Also, if they do need something it can in fact be as simple as a verification questionnaire. This fits with what my experiences have been.

zuzusplace.. it's better off sending it in anyway. my efc was reduced by 5,000 after i sent in my tax forms.

just send it in. i don't see why copying some paper and sending it out is such a big deal.
