just if you know or if you remember when you first got your dorm, what exactly was in it when you got there?

thanks!

My son's room had a bed, desk, chest of drawers, desk chair, and lamp. That's about it. He added a sofa (purchased from a graduating student) the following year.

i would suggest going on the website...

i did. i looked around and couldn't find the specifics, it just told me that it would come "equipped with the basics" and i wasn't sure what exactly the basics are.

also, what about like sheets, towels, etc..?

Desk, chair, bureau (three drawers), bookcase (sometimes), either closet or armoire, desk lamp, bed, mattress, pillow, and blanket. And wastebasket! You're also given a bag with bedsheets, towels, and pillowcases, but I suggest bringing your own sheets (you only get flat sheets, which never stay on the slippery mattresses; you want some fitted sheets that hang on to the mattress).

Bureau in my memory has 4 drawers, bookcase is given to everyone.

Also, the pillows are gross so bring your own. And the blanket is like...sandpaper. The towels are small so if you're a girl and want to walk over to the showers in a towel, bring your own. The lamp is really bad, too, bring a desk lamp.

Now that you mention it, I think I've seen taller bureaus with more drawers and shorter ones with fewer. The blankets look like they're made from the matted hair of a mangy prehistoric animal :-) You definitely want to bring your own or invest in a new one once you get there.

thanks everyone! very helpful.

make sure you get extra long twin. I also bought a down mattress cover to make it more cozy.

Are there stores around Exeter to buy sheets that fit multiple preferences seeing as transporting bedding is just one more thing to ship/pay for airfare/ect?

If you like Wal-Mart, there is one in Epping, NH (10 minutes up the 101). There is a large shoe store and a Loews (like a Home Depot) in the same plaza. Exeter often has busses to it. There is also a Wal-Mart in Portsmouth, NH (25 minutes away). The Portsmouth Target will not open until November, but there is a Target in Somersworth (30-40 minutes). No Exeter busses go there, but Target ships (usually free) to Exeter PO boxes. The mall is in Newington NH, it is rather small and a little dark and dingy. Nothing really upscale like in Massachusetts ( no stores like Coach or Williams Sonoma -things like Gap and Sears, Hollister, etc.). Exeter busses do go to the mall. There is a Linen's and Things, a big movie theatre, a fabric store, Old Navy, Best Buy, Michael's craftstore, Dick's , and Barnes and Noble within walking distance of the Mall. Downtown Portsmouth is a little gem - but really expensive. I think Exeter busses go there once in a while - some really cool stores and cafes. The best is Popovers on the Square (Tomato bisque, a popover, and drinking chocolate - my younger daughter's standard order on a winter day post-ballet class) - which is conveniently located next to a lovely local bookshop (RiverRun) and a Life is Good store (very fuzzy socks). There is a great makeup store on Bow Street, and a fun clothing store called Bliss just down from there. Exeter itself has no store in which to buy bedding - it is mostly cafes, a Sporting goods store owned locally, bookshop, a lingerie store, a toy store, and giftshops.

Thank you!!!

I had a lot of things like that shipped directly to exeter before my son started. they have directions about how to have packages addressed before the student arrives. it really helped to have all the bedding shipped up before.

but the Exeter ebook says packages can only arrive on or after August 15th

from what I remember there were different addresses to ship packages to for different dates, and there was a small per package charge. it was much easier than transporting everything up there ourselves

Is shipping bedding cost effective? Even with the $15-25 luggage charge on planes now it seems cheaper to just lug it with you, is that poor planning on my part?

thanks.

It is cost effective when you ship direct from a company that is having a free shipping promotion, such as Target. Every week I get an email with the category of merchandise that qualifies for free shipping - sometimes it is simply a dollar threshhold that you have to meet (usually 100+).
Adding up sheets, pillows, towels, storage drawers, alarm clock, blanket, etc - that's over $100. Any minute they will be having a 'dorm essentials' promotion - that's what I am waiting for....
